want to walk you to you to the 2023 american battlefield trust annual conference here in franklin, tennessee. we really appreciate you all coming out here and being a part of this event. and our next speaker is going to talk specifically about the battle here at franklin, which is one of the most famous or infamous battles of the american civil war, which took place in november of 1864. many of you will be traveling out to franklin to check out that battlefield site over the next few days. you'll be out there with some great historians, including my boss, gary edelman, as well as eric jacobson, who is part of the battle of franklin trust. eric runs the historic sites out there, places like carton, rip avila and of course, the carter house, where really was the epicenter of the battle there at franklin. so we're excited to get you out to the battlefield. we know that this is some of your first times to be out here at franklin and at the american battlefield trust annual conference. and we've done a lot of work with our partners out here. so to hit that 56,000 acre mark, we had to do a lot of

, tennessee grow and progress. they don't fit the carpetbagging mythology, the myth, because that's one thing they did. they did recognize smart things. marrying southern daughters here, but also they didn't bring a radical social agenda. they did support emancipation. but these were more moderate who didn't necessary really advocate for greater civil and political rights for african-americans having done that, they were suitable stock to stay. now there were some radical republicans who showed up here got driven out real quick in knoxville, tennessee. but back to the whole and were these southern soldiers. they weren't really southern soldiers. they came from southern sympathizers and families on part. these were very young men on average about 22 years of age. one player, 14, the knoxville. knoxville is where an older that 25 and a half on average the whole distance were a mix. they had two union veterans and two confederate veterans and one of those union veterans was basically a medical cadet. he didn't see any

in 1994, don was elected as the 47th governor of the state of tennessee. he was len then elected to servo serve a second term in 1998 by a record margin. during his tenure as governor, he ushered in new businesses and companies to the state of tennessee. his families first welfare program significantly reduced the number of families on welfare. and he ensured tennessee became the first state to connect all of its public schools and libraries to the internet. his life can be summed up in one word. service. he dedicated his life to the betterment of the volunteer state, and he taught us all many lessons along the way. if you walk the streets of memphis, or nashville, other cities throughout tennessee, washington, d.c. you'll meet a lot of people who owe their careers and their livelihoods to don. indeed, he was a person of honor and integrity. on a personal note i'll tell you that don was not only a mentor to me, but to so many others in tennessee and across the nation. he has a true legacy that will continue to live on in those in and out of public service.
