so put an ad in a couple of tennessee papers and what happened was in dayton, tennessee, a kind of local impresario, saw the ad and got together with a group of people in a drugstore where they used to hang out, mostly men, as a matter of fact, seemed to me, and what they did was ask a young biology teacher who happened to also be the football coach, which is sort interesting and they asked him if he would volunteer and he said, yeah, he would. you can't teach the theory. you can't teach biology without the theory of evolution. what was interesting to to a lot of these people was that darwin's of species had been published a long time ago, 1859, and theory of evolution was by this time and as accepted as, say, the theory of gravity. so it was kind of astonishing. the aclu at, that particular point to, very famous men at the time got involved in the trial. there was group of christian fundamentalist who asked william jennings bryan, who had been the three time presidential nominee on the democratic ticket if he would serve as lead in the prosecution of the case. and he who had been progre
