. >> we're here at the tennessee state library archives in nashville, tennessee. this is the chief repository of tennessee's history. there are 3 presidents who stayed at tennessee. the earliest is andrew jackson, one of his successors, james k. polk, and a president that succeeded abraham lincoln, andrew johnson. we'll be looking today at some of the items in our collections for two of those presidents, james k. polk and andrew johnson. both are interesting in the sense they were almost accidental presidents. they were not fully prepared for the job. they were, polk was called the dark horse president. so they came to the presidency somewhat unexpectedly, but yet both were presidents during times of tremendous importance and turmoil in the nation's history. polk was the 11th president of the united states. he was born in north carolina. as was andrew johnson. and came to the states around 1807. he married a woman named sarah childress from murray county and murray county was his home as well as others of the polk family. polk was a protege of andrew jackson's and

tennessee was the last state to ratify that on august 18th in 1920. but before that susan b. anthony spoke in this building in 1897 when tennessee was celebrating their 100th anniversary as a state with the tennessee centennial exposition. that was the first time that women were able to kind of hear from this national leader and get involved in the movement. in 1914 temperature had the first women -- tennessee had the first women's suffrage parade in the south. and based on that and what the local women did, the national women's suffrage convention that susan b. anthony started had their convention right here at the ryman. and many people have been to conventions that had more free time than work time. the women that came here the fall of 1914, they wanted the right to vote, they were going to work hard. the sessions lasted until be three a.m. in this building when the women got the right to vote. and interestingly enough, the ryman has always been a place, because it's so large, for political conventions of the state parties; the democratic party and the republican party. so

i love it and i represent the whole state of tennessee, each city is different. i could not be more proud of it. i gave a talk in marietta, georgia the other day about how chattanooga became the way it was. i became so emotional about my hometown. chattanooga, one of the things that is unique is our city has been able to keep the civic, business, and cultural center area, which so many cities across our country have not. we obviously have a lot of entrepreneurialism there and some great manufacturing especially recently brought in a great company. upswing.been on the it is filled with people who are so unique. i mean, people who give of themselves to make other people's lives better. it is a very, very unique place in that regard. and then if you look at the outdoor amenities, i just yesterday rode my bike with my wife elizabeth along the riverfront, which again, as a community, we created, it is an outstanding place to live. i do not know of a community that has a better quality of life in america than chattanooga. the interesting thing is, it just keeps getting
