we begin in el paso where foxes garrett tenney brings us the latest. garrett? >> reporter: right now, investigators say all signs point to this being a hate crime. el paso zoo's county sheriff says the gunmen came here to kill hispanics. we are hearing stories from survivors that seem to support the idea. one of them is 50-year-old chris pratt who was shopping for groceries at walmart on saturday when the shooting began. brandt, who is african- american, told the el paso times he saw the gunmen allow white and black customers to leave while he targeted hispanics. brandt is one of the heroes in this tragedy. rather than escaping himself, he stayed and tried to distract the gunmen by throwing bottles at him. through his heroism, he was shot twice in the ribs and remains hospitalized. this afternoon, we also heard from another survivor, 23-year- old octavio lozada who was shopping with his nephew, javier when the shooting began. they tried to run but the uncle was shot in the foot and as he lay there on the ground, he watched his nephew's life slip away. >> i just

jon: garrett tenney, thank you. hour we're learning new details about the victims and survives of those deadly mass shootings in el paso, texas, and dayton, ohio. christina coleman has more from our west coast bureau. >> reporter: jon, the shoot anything dayton, ohio, happened in a popular bar and nightclub district, so quite a few surveillance cameras captured video of people running for their lives. dozens of shots were fired. dayton police releasing the names of the people shot and killed including the gunman's own sister. the victims range in age from 22 to 39 years old. 27 people were also injured. a vigil will be held tonight in honor of the dayton victims. authorities saying it's unclear how much harm the shooter could have caused with his extra magazines and body armor in downtown dayton. a fund being set up to help the victims. >> i think what's most amazing about our community is once people woke up this morning as early as five a.m., six a.m., seven a.m., folks and lead user from across the community -- l

we're going to go to garrett tenney who has been on the scene for about an hour now and spoke to couple witnesses when he got there. garrett, what else have you learned at this point? >> reporter: well, you heard the big highlights from the lieutenant governor. the shooter is in custody. we just spoke with the spokesman of the el paso police department a short time ago. they said they don't believe there is currently an imminent threat to the community. but they are searching multiple areas here. including predominantly at the walmart, including several nearby areas as well including the mall. so they are searching the areas, just to be sure there are no other ongoing threats. we can tell you that just a short time ago they moved us back a little bit further, so about 10, 15 minutes ago, you could see there was police staging outside of that, gearing up in heavy body armor and helmets, looked like they were preparing to go inside. they are not letting their guard down at this point. adding to what the lieutenant governor said, we have heard multiple stores rise of folks that were there
