nbc bay area's kimberly tere is in san jose with their story. kimberly? >> reporter: diane, last year at this time, terrence shaw couldn't even walk through the street without losing his breath. now he can hike up to 30 miles and is back riding his bicycle again. the 62-year-old had cardio myopathy. his heart stopped twice and he was given a death sentence. in march of last year, doctors implanted a device that would buy him more time until a donor heart could be found. in july, he got a heart transplant. the one he had been waiting for. the organ came from a 32-year-old hayward man. he made the decision at the age of 16 to be an organ donor. yesterday, shaw says he was able to meet his family. he said it was very emotional, and he was at a loss for words to say to his mother who had just lost her son nine months ago. >> i said, this must be really hard for you, and it's very bizarre that we're in this place. a and, you know, and the emotions, obviously, are high. and it's harder for you than it is for me. and i wish i could, you know, have something beyo

nbc bay area's kimberly tere joins us from south san jose with the latest for us. kimberly? >> reporter: diane, san jose police spent several hours here. a huge portion of this shopping center, i should say, was shut down as police went about their investigation this morning into the afternoon. san jose police say they started receiving reports of a shooting at about 9:30 this morning and when they arrived, they found a man and woman dead, each with a gunshot wound. now steps away in one of the victim's cars, police say they also found a 17-month-old girl strapped into a car seat. police say the toddler, who is not injured, is now in the care of child protective services as investigators look into the relationship between the man and the woman and whether either of them were related to the child. >> it's kind of strange that it would happen in broad daylight right here like that. this is a usual spot i come every day. >> reporter: the shopping center was crowded at the time of the shooting and police say they have a lot of witnesses they have been talking to. police say they
