i'm terrell brown. this morning, one of america's highest ranking military leaders has been caught up in the investigation that led to the resignation of cia director david petraeus. general john allen is the top u.s. commander in afghanistan. allen is under investigation by the pentagon for alleged inappropriate communications with jill kelly. she's the tampa, florida, woman, who is said to have received threatening e-mails from petraeus's mistress. a pentagon official says allen and kelly exchanged up to 30,000 communications between 2010 and 2012. it's unclear if they were involved in sexual matters or classified information. allen will remain the u.s. commander in afghanistan for now. but these latest developments only serve to widen the scandal that has gripped the nation's capital since friday. tara mergener is in washington with more. what's the latest there? >> reporter: good morning to you. that's right. another twist in this drama. defense secretary leon panetta ordered a pentagon investigatio

i'm terrell brown. we begin with the resignation of cia director david petraeus. lawmakers want to know if national security was compromised by the extramarital affair that forced him to step down and why they weren't told sooner. it was harass emails allegedly from petraeus' mistress to another woman that triggered an fbi probe. >> reporter: good morning. jill kelly took her concerns to the fbi several months ago eventually exposing the affair. now congress is demanding more details. cbs news has learned this woman 37-year-old jill kelly triggered an fbi investigation leading to the resignation of cia director david petraeus. petraeus resigned friday after word got out he was having an affair with his biographer paula broadwell. kelly went to the fbi after receiving emails from broadwell. broadwell made this comment about petraeus during a publicity tour last friday. >> i think he's a terrific role model for young people. >> reporter: congressional leaders are going to start an inquiry of their own. >>
