terrence, we heard president barack obama weighing in on the comments. does that speak to the gravity of these recordings and what it represents about the culture, about america? >> no question about that. but don, i want to point something out. the most unfortunate thing here is, this is sort of letting a lot of people off the hook, because people are acting as if, in general, that this is a highly unusual situation, and i tell you something, having been a professional sports journalist for 40 years, i can tell you numerous times where i've talked through the years with owners, managers, coaches, who said things that were borderline racist. i've heard owners call black players colored to me. so if they're using the word colored to me, you can imagine what they're saying behind the scenes. >> david, you're nodding your head in agreement again. >> there are people that use the "n" word in the locker room. it goes around and these are kids that are throwing this word around that shouldn't be said period. but when you see people of that stature that should

joining us from atlanta, terrence moore columnist for mlb.com.well is a prominent sports attorney. gentlemen, a pleasure to have you here to discuss this. john and i have been spending a lot of time off air discussing this whole mess. the best word we can use for it. in this mess maybe donald sterling has done something positive by opening a discussion about race in pro sports and race in america. what are your thoughts? we'll start with you, terrence. >> there's no doubt about that. this has been going on forever. racism in life, racism in sports. and it always gets me. people talk about donald sterling is treating his players like they are commodities. this has always been the case. major league baseball had the reserve clause which was legalized slavery where this didn't have anything to do with just black players but white players were bound to a team forever more. that's always been the case. you look at the racism part of it. you know, people think of the '60s and '50s on back when it comes to racism and baseball or sports pre-april 15th, 1

joining me now on the rapid response panel, terrence moore, columnist at mlb.com and bob nightingale,mnist. gentlemen, great to have you with us tonight. on a sad story, unfortunate that a great one such as hank aaron or anyone of color would have to put up with this. bob, you interviewed aaron and got a chance to read some of the hate mail he received after your article came out. what struck you the most? >> i mean, just heartbreaking. everything mr. aaron said holds true, where he said as much as things have changed, a lot have stayed the same. just as racism is not as overt as it used to be, but simply camouflaged. and i think the mail that's gone to the braves' offices this week simply reflect that to signal what's still going on. >> terrence, what does it say about where we stand as a country? i mean, how can we have tough conversations about race if this is going to be the response? >> well, i'll tell you something, ed i worked at the "atlanta journal-constitution" for 25 years i was the first african-american general sports columnist in the history of the south. back in 1984. p

we have come a long way, as terrence points out.nto the life of andre's former partner. >> yes. >> whose life has picked up. so, how interesting was it for you to pick up this character of katherine, be able to interpret all the changes she goes through in the play under two hours? >> well, she's frozen. she's frozen in grief. she's frozen in time. she's kind of stuck. and the spectacular pace at which the country has changed socially and legally is perplexing to her. the other characters are beautiful but they -- but what terrence has done so well is to do a generational play about attitudes, you know, of a woman my age, middle aged man whose life is half closet and now open, the new gay man who has never apologized about his sexuality and the little boy who is the innocent. so with those four points of view, we get to cover a lot of territory. >> terrence, groundbreaking. first time we're seeing a married, legally married gay couple on broadway. >> it is. >> it will permeate the media everywhere. it's fantastic. >> we've come such
