let's get to terry mcsweeney who has been at the rescue site for hours. where are they at this point? >> reporter: they are where they have been for 11 hours, oakland firefighters joined by alameda county firefighters trying to free this man who has been stuck in this hole. he has been down there since about 12:30 this afternoon. he was working on a sewer pipe digging through the sand and the walls caved in. he couldn't get him out. the crews dig out the sand and the sand keeps going down on him. they brought out a vacuum truck to suck out the sand and it comes back in. and now they have a wood worker who has a working table out here. he's got a table saw and cutting wood to specifications trying to shore up that sand to make sure it doesn't come on him again. you can see how many people are out here. 30 at one point. oakland fire and alameda county fire. they have fresh workers. they have the wood going down now. but that's not the only problem. listen to this. >> the problem is there is a sand soil in there and there is also a clay. so when we are movin
