terry mcauliffe the winner.e is, you see the projection that we just made with 96% of the votes now, in he's up by 17,120. 47% to 46%. only 4% of the vote yet to be counted. john, how did he do it? >> he did it by winning where the people are. if you look at the map, see all this red think ken cucinnelli had to win. but he can thank the people will in the suburbs of northern virginia. that's loudon county. prince william county, to the south of d.c. about 70% of the vote counted, 11-point margin there. bigger margin for terry mcauliffe there. and in fairfax county closer to washington, d.c., 21point gap. 91%. this is an hour ago or so terry mcauliffe was trailing, when the votes came in they provided the margin of difference. why was this such a close wrestling match? the exit polls are fascinating. these will be studied looking ahead to 2014 and 2016, because this state is now such a bellwether state in presidential politics. ken cucinnelli, 53% of the voters in virginia oppose obama care. look at that. 80% of

and 65% of them voted for the democrat in the race, terry mccauliffe.oining us now from mccauliffe campaign headquarters, chuck todd, host of "the daily rundown." so nbc news originally said it was too early, now it's too close. what can you tell us? >> reporter: here's what we can tell you about what changed, frankly as the raw vote count came in, sometimes they can hold a have a margin of error. as the night goes on, the polls are corrected a little bit. but as we know, the vote was out, there's about 20% of the vote that's still uncounted, almost all of it is exclusively in northern virginia, why does that matter? because northern virginia is now a heavily democratic area of the state. so as you have noticed, as the vote count has come in, mccauliffe has closed the gap on cuccinelli. cuccinelli performed a -- if mccauliffe does end up performing at where democrats normally do in northern virginia and he does eke out a victory, he's going to have northern virginia, the issue of abortion and women to thank. because it's going to be essentially a tale o

they voted big for the democratic candidate terry mcauliffe. a big part of terry mcauliffe's win in the suburbs, suburban women. the gender gap one big factor. another thing he did especially after the government shutdown, he said ken cucinnelli was the darling of the tea party. 42% of virginia voters opposed the tea party movement. look at what they did today. those voters giving a huge edge to mcauliffe. in a close race the tea party a huge factor here. in the end this was the essence of terry mcauliffe's campaign message even in a state that has been reliably red in the past, he said ken cucinnelli was too conservative. after the electorate agreed with terry mcauliffe in a close race painting his opponent as an extremist on the social issues and tea party agenda enough to give terry mcall their narrow victory in the state of virginia. people will study the maps as we look forward to 2016. this one very closely because of virginia's key role as a presidential swing state. piers? >> thank you very much indeed, john king. when we come back new

dana, governor elect terry mcauliffe, sounds strange on my tongue. how exactly did he do this tonight? >> first of all i should point out i think you can see behind me he's literally right here glad handing, shaking hands, in a way that we would always see him sort of stand behind the candidate that he was supporting, usually a clinton, watching them do this. so to your point that it is a little bit odd for those of us who have covered politics for so long and terry mcauliffe as the political operative staffer and not the actual principal is sort of bizarre. how did he do this tonight? he did this in a way that was very un-terry mcauliffe like. he was very disciplined. so the point where you talked extensively to chris christie. just for example we tried very hard to get an interview with terry mcauliffe. he was not giving any interviews to any national media. actually very few to local virginia media for awhile because they wanted to very much keep him on message. and this message has been, as gloria was just talking about you were talking about his

i want to talk about terry a little more. that has been a workhorse where i work, in congress. i see tom latham who has been working hard. he is one of those guys who's in there fighting every day for the conservative common principles between us, wisconsin, and iowa. i want to thank tom for what he does in congress. send him back. he is one of the hardest working guys we have. i also want to talk about our good friend chuck grassley. we have been seeing a lot of each other recently because we are on the budget committee together. we make the same argument and because we keep making the arguments we do not have -- we are not where we need to be right now. chuck and i think it is not the government's money, it is your money, the taxpayers who sent it in the first place. terry mcauliffe is winning despite the fact he is terry mcauliffe. christie is winning because he is chris christie. in virginia, and another cycle or two, we will be describing virginia as a blue state. we will not be calling it a tossup or purple straight that state anymore. terry mcauliffe is benefiting from the demographic changes in that state and he got a very right-wing candidate that alienated northern virginia. in virginia, i would disagree with what kellyanne said that the virginia races in any way a referendum on ideology. none of those issues that buono tried to raise became a part of the campaign. the campaign ended -- >> vomited on. >> that campaign ended during standing. it was over. he won election by the way he dealt with sandy, he won by embracing obama, which a lot of people that conservatives did not like. he won by being bipartisan. there was never a race after that moment. i think that christie's success as a 2016 candidate will depend on next year's midterm. the model here is george w. bush in 2000. remember after 1998 -- the o

terry mcauliffe is scared to death of what obama care is doing to terry mcauliffe. and tomorrow, we need to make his fears come true. >> now, obviously if cuccinelli wins, it would be a huge upset in your state. the polls certainly indicate that this is going to be a win for terry mcauliffe, but is this a win for politicians across the country? >> well, it depends. if they're clear, like terry has been, that he supports the affordable care act, in fact he's going to enfranchise 400,000 people onto the medicaid rolls if he's elected who would not get health insurance if cuccinelli is elected, and of course terry brought president obama in sunday. so he's not running away from the affordable care act. and the president was very clear. so i agree with marco rubio for general send a very clear message to the country but i think it's a very different message than what he anticipates. >> back in 2010 republicans picked up 63 seats after the health care vote. are you concerned that this will be a huge issue for the 2014 mid-terms and are you concerned about whether or not

if terry mcauliffe, if the polls are right and terry mcauliffe wins this thing, what do you think that says about national politics? what message can we take nationally from a democrat winning in virginia under these circumstances? >> i think it says a lot. virginia, first of all, is a very competitive state. we don't like extremism. from the right or the left. and we like our politics pretty much in the center. the republicans nominated one of the most extreme tickets in the history of the commonwealth of virginia. and by way of contrast, the democrats have nominated three generally pragmatic people. and i think added to that, there was so many issues, ken cuccinelli and mark obenshain are identified with in terms of the war on women, the famous transvaginal probe legislation, even opposing things like bipartisan transportation legislation. they went into this fall with a deficit, and then occurred the shutdown. and the shutdown has really turned off virginia voters. they see that as a dysfunctional congress, they see it as an example of that extremism. they don't like it. many of us

there republicans who did vote for terry and the numbers be what they may, they did vote for terry. >> doing television ads for him. >> absolutely. i want to go back to a story convergence and get to you respond. i heard from a lot of supporters and strategist who is said they spend a couple of weeks trying to convince you and others to get christ tow campaign for cuccinelli. >> it's your own campaign to run. we were running this year and didn't go out of state for anybody during the course of the year. you will be helping a lot of people next year like in 2010, 2011, and 2012. we have a race to run. >> despite the big lead some. >> this is a democrat state. take nothing for granted. that's why we won it. we didn't take our eye off the ball. >> is this a reminder of how jerry mandered everything is? >> we have it in our state that was drawn by democrats nearly 10-1 in legislative races. this is a democratic state and it underscores how popular chris christie is. a third democrats and three times as many african americans as four years ago. that doesn't mean they will have the same mes
