i'm terry mcsweeney in for jon kelley. >> good morning.ellez in for laura garcia-cannon. we're learning more information about an overnight shooting involved sheriff's deputies in sonoma county near santa rosa. christie smith just arrived at the sheriff's office. what do we now know? >> reporter: this is an incredible story. we're getting reports that it started with a woman who was kidnapped and she was able to text to police or dispatchers that she was a victim of a kidnapping and that she was in a car and was able to let them know which direction she thought she was going. and then the deputy spotted that car and that's when a pursuit started. we're hearing that this started last night around 11:00 near santa rosa with a male suspect and a woman texting a frightening story she was being held hostage. >> we lost christie smith. sheriff's deputies investigating a kidnapping and officer-involved shooting. we'll bring you the latest. >>> federal lawsuit will be filed this morning against the oakland unified school district police department

i'm terry mcsweeney. diane dwyer has the night off.he question is why a man would drive a car into a crowded walmart store in san jose and attack customers. it happened on story road half a mile from where highway 101 meets 280. several were injured, the drive ev's been arrested. kimberly terry is live with the latest on this bizarre story. >> reporter: that crash happened at about 11:15 this morning. as you can imagine, both the parking lot and this store were packed with customers. police say the suspect was driving through the parking lot, hitting cars, before he went through the sliding glass doors right into the store. police say the car ended up on a beer display 30 feet inside walmart. once that car stopped the driver got out and picked up a blunt object from inside the store and began hitting customers with it. seriously injuring at least one person. witnesses say the crash was so loud, some people initially thought it was gunfire. >> i heard this big crash. what was that? is so i'm looking around. all of a sudden i see all the

i'm terry mcsweeney. diane dwyer is off tonight. a typical neighborhood was shocked to hear a police pursuit and then gunfire this afternoon. the epicenter of the investigation, the intersection of blossom and calero avenues. kimberly is joining us from the scene with more. >> reporter: san jose police say the chase that ended here actually started about nine miles away on union and camden. police say at about 2:30 this afternoon an officer known as the man inside a car was acting suspiciously. as the officer approached, the driver took off but was later spotted by the same officer. at that time, the suspects rammed the patrol car considered assault when the pursuit purr pseudo. this is video provided by one of the witnesses. this chase ended in a residential neighborhood. the car that had a blown out tire pulled over on blossom avenue near calero and that's when the driver got out and made a threatening gesture. two officers fired and the suspect was killed. police say during the chase the suspect ran two other patrol cars and also

"today in the bay's" christie smith just arrived at the sheriff's office in santa rosa. what do we know so far? >> reporter: good morning to you. i can tell that you we're at the sheriff's department. there's been a little bit of activity within the last five minutes. a number of officers coming and going quickly from the parking lot. trying to confirm a lot of detamd detai details. there was an officer involved shooting overnight and this may be tied to some kidnapping as well involving a woman. now our photographer on scene is telling us that it appears a male suspect may have been killed in this interaction. this started around 11:00 last night is what we're hearing around santa rosa and added near odd fellows park road. the kidnapping this morning is on the sheriff's incident page and report

. >>> good evening, i am terry mcsweeney. >> i'm diane dwyer.eople are dead and one is in critical condition tonight after a car accident in daley city. the crash happened shortly after 8:00 last night on east more avenue west of 280. monte francis is there with an update on the investigation tonight. monte? >> reporter: well, good evening. i just got off the phone with the san mateo county coroner's office and they are not releasing yet the identities of the three victims because some of the victims' family are traveling abroad and not yet been notified. in the meantime, you can see behind me there is a considerable amount of debris in the road from this accident along with some flowers and candles that people have left in memory of the three people who were killed. the coroner would also not release the ages or genders of the victims. we just talked to a witness who described what happened here last night. he says a red car was parked alongside the road here on east moore avenue and making a u-turn from a parking spot when a bmw came speeding
