i'm terry mcsweeney. >> the breaking news in the east bay now where firefighters are battling a house fire in oakland. it's happening near the corner of 90th avenue and a street not far from international boulevard. >> christie smith just arrived at the scene. what's it look like? >> reporter: good morning. at this point firefighters have this knock eed down but what is unusual firefighters are not working on the home that burned itself, they are working on the one that was next to it because these homes were so close together that it actually kind of spread to two homes around it. this is what we're talking about. firefighters are actually on the roof of a home right now kind of doing overhaul on it. again, this is not the home that actually caught fire first. that's the one next to it. this started overnight about 2:40 a.m. i had a chance to speak with one of the firefighters. when they got here there was heavy smoke and flames from a modular home here on 98th avenue near international. there was a family inside. they didn't hear smoke detectors, they smelled smoke, they got out, tw

. >> i'm terry mcsweeney. bizarre story breaking news out of the east bay, investigators say this fire at an oakland home started on a stove. now the man who lives there says a rodent may have spread the flames. here's how he says it may have happened. wakes up this morning, turns on his gas stove, there's a mouse in that gas stove. the mouse catches on fire and starts running around the house, catching the house on fire. you're looking at the result of -- not positive it was the mouse but it's something that is put out there. fire officials say that's plausible. it's possible that might have happened bought mouse catching on fire on a stove. started near the corner of 90th avenue and a street, not far from international boulevard. and that fire spread to two other homes. christie smith is at the scene and is going to join us with more on that in a little bit. i have never heard that as a possible explanation of a house fire. a mouse catching on fire in the stove running around catching things on fire and look

"today in the bay's" christie smith in the pacific heights neighborhood where this all started. you talked to a man who heard what happened. >> good morning to you. you know, this whole thing sounds pretty unreal. it really did happen. neighbors saw it. two men, they say, in a van actually drove up and ripped an atm that was bolted down right in front of the store. this is the mayflower market. neighbors say they heard these guys yelling, be quiet. wake up the neighbors. that's exactly what they did at 3:30 this morning at fiphilmore and jackson street. the bike was circling around and hit a bike rack. they say these guys were in the van and talking to each other and then went a couple of times hitting this post where the atm was. they got it to knock down. they say they ended up pulling out a chain. they loaded it into their van.

i'm terry mcsweeney. it's expected to be an hour before crews leave the scene of a crash in oakland. new video in, you can see the rig crashed into retaining wall barriers sending sand on the two right lanes of northbound 880. it happened south of fifth avenue. all lanes reopened about 4:30, but the fifth avenue off ramp has been shut for repairs. officials expect it to be ready by about an hour from now. >> also new, officials think two vehicles that crashed in san jose may have been racing. it happened about midnight on northbound 101 just south of great america parkway. three lanes were closed for about an hour. they are open now. the chp says two vehicles were speeding, maybe racing when they crashed into each other and the center divide a. third car crashed into the first two. at least one car burst into flames. everyone made it out. the chp says there are minor injuries. >> the bay area is outdoing itself when it comes to cold weather. at oakland and san jose, right now both of those spots freezing

i'm terry mcsweeney. raj and jess have the night off. a san jose family was having a christmas eve breakfast when they received an unwelcomed surprise. a car slamming into their living room at the intersection of cropley avenue in east san jose. police say the drivers were street racing. nbc bay area's sam brock joins us now live from outside the east san jose home. sam? >> reporter: the family members who live here popped their head out. in better spirits than they were earlier today. understandably. behind me you have the collateral damage from earlier in the day. the street race. videotape evidence shows there were young drivers, two 16 or 17-year-old drivers swerving out of the lanes on cropley avenue, got tangled up ending up in this house adding another chapter of misfortune to a home that's seen plenty of it. when carollers sing of a white christmas, this is probably not what one san jose family had in mind. whitish chalky debris that only this morning looked more like a wall, protectsing the trove of gifts. this affable gentleman

"today in the bay's" chase cain on the scene. what can you tell us? >> reporter: terry, this is now a two-alarm fire and fire officials are asking people if they're anywhere in the vicinity of redwood city to stay inside with their doors and windows closed. this is not a shelter in place order. they're just asking you to take precautions, because obviously, we're talking about a lot of smoke that has been pouring into the air for going on four hours now. the sims metal facility recycles, essentially, just old junk metal from cars to appliances. and the fire officials say it was a pile of appliances that exploded around 1:00 a.m. and caught fire. that is what has been burning ever since. as we mentioned, a two-alarm fire. they have brought in help from nearby fire departments to get this under control, try and put the fire out.

. >> i'm terry mcsweeney. crews have controlled a fire burning all morning long at sims metal management in redwood city. that's on seaport boulevard along the bay. nbc bay area's chase cain is live in redwood city. chase, this is not the first time crews have been called out to this scrap metal yard. >> reporter: no, terry, it is not. plenty have people have asked us questions about that same thing. what is going on here? >> they also say it is still just too soon to know what happened. >> from overhead you can see the size of the flames at sims metal management. a fire that burned for nearly seven hours. firefighters say an explosion sparked the flames igniting a pile of scrap appliances 25 feet high and 75 feet wide. >> what we're doing is it's being systematically removed, broken apart, placed on the conveyor and taken up the conveyor and shredded and cooled and put out. >> but before redwood city fire could put it out, embers blew over to three cement trucks parked nearby, lighting them on fire too. the n

as you can see weather watcher terry mcsweeney giving us great video. 76 degrees right there on the water. december 25th. you show this to your friends and family on the east coast, they'll become extremely jealous. great weather on the coast and 70 not too far away from half moon bay and we had the sunshine and the reason why we're getting these warm temperatures is high pressure which has been locked in on us. you can see these temperatures and the air quality being a bit of an issue for tomorrow and also into friday. but some improvement by the time we get into the weekend now and we may see our last of the spare the air days for friday. right now, it does look like we'll see our 20th spare the air day as we approach friday. right now the wind pattern is still off shore, that is the reason why. of course, we're staying dry and also bringing in a little bit of smoke from the central valley and some of those east bay valleys will see that through friday. but before the winds turn back to a sea breeze, moving into the weekend. the blocking pattern that we're seeing right now more common t

i'm terry mcsweeney. >> that underground fire has been booming for three hours now that is just west of interstate 580. nbc bay area's chase cain live at the scene. they're just going to let this thing burn out? >> yeah. we have a fire truck that's trying to get through. obviously, that's sort of the priority is letting the first responders get here to the scene. just around the corner from where we are -- actually, let's take a look at the chopper video from just a bit earlier. you'll see that there are flames just coming up from the street. that is because a natural gas pipeline underground. we're told about three or four inches in size that pipe broke at some point, and they don't know what ignited it, but there are flames coming up from the street. oakland fire has been here for many hours. they are still allowing the fire to burn because they say that is just the safest thing. they sort of compared it to a pilot light in your oven. as long as that pilot light is burning, there's really no risk of further explosion. now, there are several homes here on the street. at least three

i'm terry mcsweeney.ts to move her out of hospital oakland. they say they've found another facility willing to care for jahi. they asked the hospital to perform surgery so a feeding tube can be inserted if she were to be moved to the new facility. the hospital said no. a family attorney said it's going to ask an outside doctor to help, and the case may end up back in court. >> the judge did not authorize or order my surgical procedure or transfer to another facility. children's hospital does not believe performing surgical procedures on the body of a deceased person is an appropriate medical practice. >> mcmath's family is not naming the new facility. doctors say jahi is brain dead. she's been on the ventilator following complication from having her tonsels removed. the order mandating oakland to keep her on a ventilator expires monday. >>> cracking down on unsafe drivers. patrols will be stationed throughout the city until 4:00 tomorrow morning. looking for drunk drivers. the increased enforcement and du

i'm terri mcsweeney. an update to the breaking news out of oakland.olf links road and fontaine street. this is just west of interstate 580. there are evacuations in the immediate neighborhood. six homes in total to this point. we just got off the phone with nearby bishop o'down high school. we are told the principal is aware of the situation and is seeing if an evacuation is necessary, but has not called one yet. we have a crew headed to the scene, and we'll bring you more information as it comes into our newsroom. as you see, the flames coming right up out of the street from the underground gas that is burning. >>> the ntsb has postponed it's hearing into the asiana airlines crash. they tweeted today's hearing will be delayed because of a snowstorm headed for the nation's capital. the pilot and training manager were scheduled to testify along with representatives from boeing, the faa, and the san francisco fire department. the plane crashed while trying to land at sfo in july killing three teenagers. we'll take a break and come back with weather and
