terry mcsweeney joins us from the scene. what do we know? >> reporter: a half block from where i'm standing is where it's all going on. the officers have been around that house since this started at 6:30 this evening. and 20 minutes or so we hear something like this. take a listen. >> we know you are inside the residence. come out with your hands up. >> reporter: officers have been asking people in that house to give themselves up peacefully. a woman comes back to the house and a door is open and shouldn't have been. she goes on her smartphone and checks her security system and sees two people in her house. the police come here. that was 6:30 and it is now 11:00 and the police have surrounded the house. police described how she came back to the house to find the doors open and what happened next. >> she used her smartphone to check the video surveillance in her home and was able to see what she thought were two individuals who she didn't recognize inside her home. >> reporter: as police have been asking people to come out of the house they h

terry mcsweeney is live with the effort to keep the bay bridge lights project going. terry? >> reporter: the lights were on, they've been on for a year, they'll be on for another 12 months. then they have to come down for bridge work. are they ever going to back up? that is the $12 million question. some people could spend the night looking at the lights, dancing on the western span of the bay bridge. >> everybody can see this, and i hope it stays for a while. those are my co-workers. >> reporter: the artist who created this display still loves it. >> what's exciting is how open ended it is. it's highly subjective. >> reporter: restaurants report significantly more customers because of the lights. >> we see more people coming earlier, coming later, staying in the bar just to see the lights. >> reporter: but the 25,000 lights have to come down next march so the bridge can be repainted. to put them back up for 12 more years is a $12 million project. >> this has created a sense of icon here in the bay area that just feels like it wants to be here through 2026. >> reporter: some

terry mcsweeney, nbc bay area news. >>> this just into our newsroom. deputies arrested a man in what may be a gang related shooting in san jose. he faces attempted murder charges. deputies say he shot at a man standing in the driveway of a home on east hills drive sunday night. that's a few blocks south of james lick high school. the victim was shot in the leg. >>> another pedestrian accident in san francisco and it is another child. it happened just after 6:00 this evening at the intersection of ocean. the victim is going to be okay and police did arrest the driver for failing to yield. this is the sixth person hit by a car in san francisco just this week. >>> a craigslist transaction that went horribly wrong. a south bay woman says she was kidnapped while answering an ad on craigs list. it happened on monday in san jose. the woman says she agreed to meet a craigslist seller at the store to buy some iphones. once there, two men pulled out a gun, kidnapped here and took her to the bank to withdraw cash. >> how scary was it? >> very scary. what do you f

terry mcsweeney is live where police were called after terry, a man walked in with a gunshot wound and they know he is connected to that car? >> yeah, they say he is a rather lucky man, even though it may not sound that way. he pulls in about 2:30. gets out with a bullet wound to his arm and walks in for treatment. look at video that will prove he is a lucky man. he's saying it happened on 580, someone pulled up next to him and opened fire. two bullets through the driver's windshield right there in the driver's seat, also, on the passenger side, both windows blown out. so four gunshot wounds, he's just wounded in the arm. oakland police immediately after hearing that story notified the chp about the 580 shooting but investigators went out to the scene and were unable to locate a crime scene. we're presuming they were looking for bullet casings out there. that would be a tall order after so many cars had gone over that area between the time of the alleged incident and the person checking himself into the hospital here. what we have here is a man in good shape, a wound to the arm, and in

i'm terry mcsweeney. a manhunt lasted several hours and ended with deputies opening fire on a suspect. it started in morgan hill. nbc bay area's kimberly tere has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: that investigation is ongoing but as you mentioned that suspect is in the santa clara county jail booked on multiple counts of seattle with a deadly weapon and attempted murder of a peace officer. a resident on croy road called to report a suspicious car in the driveway. when confronted he sped down the driveway ramming his car into three patrol vehicles. >> at about 5:50 in the morning heard some gunshots. >> reporter: a deputy fired at least one shot. the car continued down the roadway until it crashed into the ravine and he took off. >> based on the information we had at the time we believed the suspect was armed and dangerous. so what we did is we did a reverse 911 to all the residents in the area advising them to stay in home and shelter in place. >> i was worried a little bit thachlts not norma

i'm terry mcsweeney. diane dwyer is off tonight. tonight a man is in jail in santa clara county after forcing a morgan hill neighborhood into lockdown for several hours tea today. he took off before being hunted down. kimberly tere joins us from the sheriff's office on the investigation. >> reporter: the sheriff's office is looking into exactly what led that suspect into the neighborhood to begin with. the call came in about 5:30 this morning. a resident on the 6600 block of croy road called to report a suspicious car in the driveway. three sheriff's deputies responded and when they encountered the suspect, it was almost as soon as they arrived. >> and the suspect's vehicle came down the driveway, rammed several of the patrol cars. one of the deputies fired at least one shot at the suspect car. the suspect vehicle continued down the roadway. subsequently crashed. >> reporter: at that point, they say they issued a shelter in place order for the residents in what is a heavily wooded neighborhood. telling them to stay inside and to loc

i'm terry mcsweeney. >> and i'm diane dwyer. we begin tonight with leland yee. although the evidence appears overwhelming, experts say it's far from an open and shut case. monte francis is outside yee's home with that story. monte? >> reporter: good evening. leland yee faces a series of charges, and most of them have to do with public corruption. those kinds of charges can be difficult to prove. the court of public opinion may decide that leland yee's political career is over, but the real legal case against him is another matter, according to legal analyst dean johnson. >> legally, this case is wide open. and these are the kinds of cases that defense attorneys love. >> reporter: johnson says there's nothing illegal about giving money to a politician's campaign, expecting to influence that person. nor is it unusual for them to take into consideration people's wishes. >> the latin phrase is quid pro quo. they have to prove that the money was given in exchange for an explicit promise to do certain acts. >> reporter: he points to the case of mayor gonzalez. a judge

we have several people on the scene including terry mcelderry sweeney fl -- mcsweeney. alo lot of people are telling u what they are seeing. >> reporter: we're on the north side of the fire closer to at&t. this is fourth and channel street and we have a good view of the flames going non-stop since we got here, and you can see them leaping into the air at times as they find a fresh material. firefighters have fourth street blocked off, obviously, and they have one, two, three -- i couldn't five, maybe six hoses, maybe seven hitting the pyre with all they have got. when i seen the hoses hit a house fire, they looked formidable. again, this size fire, it looks minimal. looks like a garden hose hitting it. one firefighter up on top of the ladder. you can see there, the flames behind him. a dramatic shot. hitting it from above the best he can. there is so much left to burn out here. firefighters are doing what they can do minimize, contain it to the structure. the fire has been going on for more than an hour now. still predominantly black smoke coming, burning, you get the w

i'm terry mcsweeney. >> and i'm diane dwyer. we are on right now because of the hockey game.e begin now with those major developments in ukraine. president obama and russia's president vladimir putin spoke by phone today. that was after the russian parliament gave3Ñ&8 the okay tod troops into ukraine. and tonight the white house is warning the kremlin against what it calls the continued violation of international law. nbc's bill neely reports, though, there are growing signs russia has already seized control of crimea. >> reporter: russian boots on the ground in ukraine. they're hiding their identities. their uniforms aren't marked. but they're in crimea to protect russia's interests. they have a naval base here manned by thousands. but many are now off base and on the streets rit behind the russian-speaking majority here. and there may be more, many more on the way. russia's parliament voted to approve the use of a russian force in ukraine. president putin asked for it. he got it. unanimously.
