thank you for joining us, i'm peggy bunker, terry mcsweeney is off tonight. we begin tonight with the shooting deaths of two veteran police officers who were gunned down today. they were simply sitting in their patrol car in brooklyn. the officers were identified as wenjin liu and raphael ramos. new york city is calling them heroes tonight. as is police tradition, more than 100 officers stood and saluted as the fallen officers' bodies were removed from the hospital where they died. police identified the gunman as 28-year-old ismaaiyl brinsley, who they say walked up to the officers and hit them in the head, brinsley later turned the gun on himself at a brooklyn station. investigators say that brinsley reportedly posted messages about killing police officers on instagram just days before the shooting. >> although we are still learning the details it is clear this was not a fascination. these officers were shot execution-style. a particularly despicable act. >> also, before killing the police, the investigators say that he shot his girlfriend who is expected to

terry mcsweeney, nbc bay area news. >> prepare for the worst and hope for the best. let's go to jeff ranieri. this is going to be a very powerful storm. what are we talking about in terms of timelines? >>. >> about 24 hours out from the storm system really getting going. you can see the radar. high clouds developing across the bay area, but the core of the storm is going to nail us well offshore. that's going to meet up with this powerful pacific moisture. here's the initial timeline. by 11:30 on wednesday, we will see rainfall in the north bay. the first heavy rainfall into marin and napa and sonoma by 6:30 on thursday morning. heavy rainfall continuing throughout thursday. what i top the get to next are the top three concerns. the first is the flash flooding. creeks, rivers and streams are expected to rise quickly on thursday. that is a major, major possibility of areas of flash flooding. the second is the high wind warning and likely wind gusts topping 40 miles per hour. this will bring down trees and power outages. if you are thinking of heading up to the sierra,

i'm terry mcsweeney. jessica and raj are off. christmas holiday turned into chaos in a neighborhood after a coyote bit a man and boy. fre fremont police received several calls. michelle? >> this area isn't far from a wilderness preserve. people weren't shocked it was out walking around. they were shocked to hear what it did. it attacked a 5-year-old boy. out walking with his dad. take a look at the video of neighborhood. coyote bit him on the leg. a man walking to his car on star street was bit on the leg. his kids were nearby. ra ran inside the house. coyote chased them to the door. another man, told police he had to fight it off kicking it. out jogging. victims were not injured but taken to the hospital. neighbors are worried about this. keeping pets inside. >> of it looked like a dog. it wasn't. the face was different. the ears. clearly a coyote. he wasn't acting strangely. kind of walking down the middle of the street. as i kind of came around. kempt an eye on him. he ducked on to one of the lawns. >> reporter: an hour after

i'm terry mcsweeney.co firefighters are being praised tonight for containing a wind-whipped house fire on potrero hill. flames gutted two duplexes on mississippi street. the cause is still under investigation, but the way firefighters kept it from spreading has neighbors singing their praises. this is where the fire burned the hottest, and where investigators believe it may have started in this space between these two duplexes. this video posted on instagram shows the flames shooting from the front of the buildings. the first fire crews say winds were pushing the flames towards the street. neighbors awoke to the smell of smoke and flames lighting up the sky. >> she started screaming my name, alan dhra, wake up, wake up, there is a fire. >> reporter: alejandra says her mother was the first up. corona ran outside. >> i just saw a huge like flames just popping out. >> reporter: and then she ran to the other rooms in her building to wake up her neighbors. >> this young girl here really is a hero. >> reporter:

i'm terry mcsweeney. peggy bunker has the night off. >>> right now a massive search and rescue attempt. crews looking for an airliner that lost contact and is now missing. the plane was heading to singapore from surabaya indonesia, early this morning local time. the plane lost communication with air traffic control about an hour before it was scheduled to land. nbc bay area's marianne favro joining us with the latest. >> reporter: according to air asia 162 were aboard the missing airbus. 155 passengers and seven crew members. the airline issued this statement saying airasia indonesia regrets to confirm that flight qz-8501 from surabaya to singapore has lost contact with air traffic control at 7:24 this morning. it happened 45 minutes into the flight. the aircraft was on the submitted flight plan route and was requesting deviation due to en route weather before communication was lost. you are looking at a live picture of the airport in singapore where relatives of the missing passengers are waiting to hear

i'm terry mcsweeney. >> and i'm janelle wang. raj and jessica are out tonight. late-night developments surrounding the airasia flight which disappeared over the weekend. in the past hour reports of debris spotted. pieces that resemble a plane door. an emergency slide and a life vest. at this time it has not been linked to that passenger jet. flight 8501 took out from surabaya, indonesia sunday morning bound for singapore but it abruptly dropped off from the radar 42 minutes into the flight. moments after the pilot reported poor weather. there were 162 people on board. the search for the missing plane now in its third day. the search area in the java sea has also expanded. nearly two dozen planes and helicopters along with 30 ships have been scouring the scene. the "uss sampson" is also on its way at the request of the indonesian government. the san diego-based destroyer was already in the western pacific and is expected to arrive in the area within the day. if we get any new information that goes into our newsroom regarding this debris and the plane we will keep
