i wish i could be up in the sky with them. >> reporter: terry mcsweeney, nbc news. >>> an officer of the nypd was fatally shot while sitting in her patrol car. they are calling the shooting unpro-provoked. the officer, miosotis familia was shot in the head. she was taken to the hospital where she was later died. >> she was sitting in the vehicle and he came up and fired a round into the vehicle. i don't know if anything else could be more unprovoked than that. >> right afterwards two officers spotted a man running down the street just a block away from where the shooting happened. police say the man drew a gun when officers approached him forcing them to shoot and kill him. police have not said if the gun recovered from the man was the same one used to kill the police officer. >> very tragic. it is 4:35 right now. a lot of people are talking about the fireworks show they saw akoss the bay area. for many there were some obstacles in the way to their viewing. how the fog factored in to the annual san francisco city tradition. >>> well, at least it was clear in the south bay. now the cl

terry mcsweeney has the day off. police are looking for a suspect in downtown san jose when a deadly confrontation took place off of 280 and west virginia on 2nd street. marianne favro is joining me. what do we know so far? >> reporter: well, police were called here around 10:00 this morning and now more than six hours later, they are still here investigating the homicide. police say a woman stabbed a man to death this morning and they are still looking for her. the man was taken to a nearby hospital where he died. neighbors tell us they are not surprised to hear about the murder. they say this is an area that has seen plenty of crime. >> it's hard to walk over here, especially in the night. it's very dangerous. >> reporter: jose says that it's also known to be a lot of prostitution here. police are still trying to determine a motive for the stabbing. police have not released the name of any suspects or any suspect description and they have not released the name of the victim. reporting live in san jose, marianne fav

terry mcsweeney is off tonight. a crane came down as planned tonight. most of the evacuated can begin to return home. we are live tonight in oakland and have the latest. >> reporter: one of the reasons residents could not return to their homes is because that damaged construction crane posed a risk of falling down and potential by damaging nearby buildings but now that the crane has been pulled down that concern has been eliminated. it took engineers hours to calculate how to pull down this damaged construction crane but once the cables were attached to machinery on the ground -- it took only seconds for it to come tumble down. >> it came down the way the crane engineers wanted it to work out. >> shortly after it was toppled, city officials began to work to turn power on for nearby buildings. >> we will be contacting residents and property managers. if folks want to reach out to us they can look at the city's website. >> there are a few buildings that may have been damaged with flames or smoke. those will remain off limits until the officials can decide

. >> and i'm terry mcsweeney. a sad discovery at a peninsula hotel has hollywood in mourning. john heard, perhaps best known for his role in "home alone" has died. for the very latest, we join marianne favro for more on the investigation. mariann marianne? >> our sources confirm that a maid found actor john heard at this hotel, the sheraton, in palo alto on friday afternoon. police were called out to the hotel around 2:00 and found heard unresponsive. best known for his role as the father in "hole alome alone," j heard was 71. the santa clara medical examiner's office is investigating the cause of his death, which is unclear right now. a representative for the coroner's office said an autopsy may be scheduled later. just two days before he was discovered, heard underwater minor back surgery at stanford medical center. heard's agent, tammy hunt, issued this statement, saying, "john will be very much missed by his family, friends, and his many fans. john was one of those people that you meet and know immediately that he is one of a kind. a true professional and a dear gentlemen.
