i'm terry mcsweeney. the san jose campus turned into a water park after a water main broke. it caused a lot of damage. tom jensen has been on the scene all night. what's happening out there right now? >> reporter: well, i think you can probably hear, terry, the crews are already here on scene from san jose water company making repairs. tearing up the ground here. and trying to get in there and repair a broken water main. it was quite a scene earlier tonight as students were stopped in their tracks by a river flowing the length of their campus. it went on like this for three and a half hours. it flooded the san jose state university campus from one end to the other. >> definitely did not expect to come back to this. i wasn't here when it blew. but it's a mess. >> reporter: ankle deep and higher in many places. campus police stopped students from crossing the flowing water as they tried to get back to their dorms. >> it's crazy. it's like pretty high up water too. >> reporter: the break happened on a san jose water company owned water main about 4:15, between two of the campus

i'm terry mcsweeney. they took their message about the homeless right to mayor libby schaaf's front door. tonight the mayor is responding, and other leaders are talking about what the city plans to do about the housing crisis? christie smith is in oak land with the story. christie? >> reporter: according to a spokesperson for mayor libby schaaf, she was actually out of town when the activists showed up at her home, but in a statement today said she certainly shares their passion for this issue, this very serious issue in oakland. they came and set up camp outside mayor schaaf's home temporarily, saying they were trying to push the city to provide morehousing for growing number of homeless and demand that the mayor provide better solutions to this and the housing crisis activists say they're also calling for a reduction in the police foush force budget to put that into homelessness. the mayor says we are working every day to fight the homeless impacts that affect every old oaklanders. we're also producing

terry mcsweeney is in san jose with two very different opinions of this speech. >> reporter: i talked to two people tonight with a lot in common. both came to the country illegally as children. neither are citizens. one woman loved the speech. the other didn't find anything she liked. they watched the state of the union at the services immigration rights and education or siren office in san jose. she has protection under the deferred action for childhood arrivals or daca. the president wants to give 1.8 million a path to citizenship. >> i think like they're using us and a political token. he called it amnesty which is outrageous. >> stephanie also came to the u.s. illegally as a child and kern a legal resident alien scheduled for citizenship this year. >> they are living illegally in a host country who obviously under a president who obviously is going to possibly give them a right to citizenship. they should be very thankful. >> the president wants to reduce chain migration to allow only spouses and children to follow an immigrant into the u.s. >> this is like saying i get to stay he

i )m terry mcsweeney. we are following breaking news out of the south ba >>> good evening, and thank you for joining us, i'm terry mcsweeney, following breaking news out of the south bay, just learned a shooting in san jose is now a homicide. mary ann just arrived at the scene. >>> i'm here off koto road and raleigh. there are a lot of apartment complexes in this area. 15 patrol cars are out here, and more than a dozen police officers as well investigating this. this is at the very early stage of the investigation, and i just talked to lieutenant wagger about what happened. >> we received a call of a gunshot here at this location, officers responded. and we located one victim who suffered at least one gunshot wound, and he was pronounced de ceased at the scene. >> reporter: inside or outside? >> on the sidewalk. it's very early in the investigation. >> are you looking for a suspect at this point? >> nothing that we can put out yet. we're waiting for the homicide detectives to arrive. as soon as they arrive

terry mcsweeney is in the tender loin area. >> reporter: 46-year-old jesse green is a homeless man in san francisco. he comes down here at the shell station and offers to wipe off windshields of cars. he saw a woman being savagely attacked inside the food mart. and he did not hesitate to help. this surveillance video released by san francisco police today shows jesse green that is him in the long black coat moving in from choking the 29-year-old gas clerk. >> his face was purple. he is doing the man thing on this teeny thing. she was fragile. >> reporter: the suspect 30-year-old of stockton unprovoked grabbed the clerk from behind and was choking her. >> i pulled off the other, something like that. and he just left. just like that. didn't say anything. >> reporter: officers caught up with holesstein. >> she was crying and she said thank you. i told her to get back up in the position and call the police. >> reporter: tonight after cleaning a few windows to make a few bucks, he invited us to his home. >> we are all meant to be, and that is helping somebody out, you know. >> reporter: je

good evening, i )m terry mcsweeney. a richmond police officer is recovering this evening after being injured in a hit and run while trying to respond to a sideshow. that sideshow... just a few blocks from the police department. nbc bay area )s christie smith s live in richmond with more... police had their hands full with not one, but two sideshows. the first started shortly after 2 a.m. near 42nd avenue and interstate 880. about 50 cars were involved. a chp helicopter responded, and the sideshow dispersed. but another sideshow with 200 cars started shortly after, near 54th avenue and international boulevard. the police helicopter was targeted multiple times by someone pointing a green laser... which can temporarily blind a pilot. chp officers were able to find the suspect with that laser, follow him, and arrest him. the 23-year-old pittsburgh man is now facing serious charges and hefty fines. it is a federal offense to aim a laser at an aircraft. a water main break is causing a lot of destruction in an east bay neighbo

terry mcsweeney joins us from sfo with the reaction from the passengers there. terry. >> reporter: we have to give credit to the air traffic controllers who noticed the jet headed to the wrong runway. experts say we were a matter of seconds from disaster. aviation consultant mike mccarron shows us the track approaching sfo yesterday morning. the faa said the pilot was cleared to the land on 21r, but controllers noticed it was headed for 21l where a virgin american airliner was set to take off for hawaii. >> you're looking maybe 20 seconds -- 15, 20 seconds to cover a mile's distance. it was close but there was more than enough time. >> the air mexico pilot did pull up, circle around and land safely. this follows two similar incidents in the past nine months involving air canada planes. in one incident, an air canada jet nearly landed on top of one jet awaiting takeoff. passenger's shared their thoughts. >> we had to go up and back around because the planes were too close. >> i'm confident. >> it's a near miss. >> they say they can take comfort in the fact that th
