let's get to terry mcsweeney in sacramento. much different mood where you are, much different tone from the newsom campaign. >> reporter: yeah, they were quiet into the afternoon and the evening. we are just finding out that the governor is going to be saying something after the polls close tonight, somewhere here in sacramento, and it, his people firmly believe it's going to be along the lines of a victory speech, however much of a victory speech you give when you've just won a recall election basically asking the voters to reaffirm that you should still be governor and winning. i've been here since about 3:30, in front of the gorgeous capital in sacramento and i haven't seen a car driving by saying anything out the window, nobody waving flags, nobody with a car covered with a no or yes on the recall. it's really subdued. it's not a real blood boiler. part of the reason, it's just one issue, one thing on this ballot, no propositions, no secondary election. just the recall, and it is september, not a time when people have much

i am terry mcsweeney. a lot happening right now. let's start east of sacramento.this is the bridge fire and it started about 1:00 this afternoon under the bridge that leads into auburn, which is 25 miles northeast of sacramento. you can see how quickly this thing took off. we just learned it has grown to 100 acres. 30 minutes ago it was 50 acres. evacuations are ongoing. >>> now it has been nearly a week since the evacuees have been told they can go home. >> reporter: more and more people starting to get the news, and we just had a couple people walk up to us and ask us if they could return to lake tahoe. they are elated. there's school buses lined up, and those are prepared to shuttle residents back to south lake tahoe, and there are people inside packing up and preparing to head in. we have seen evacuees packing back up. tony said he's happy to pack up and head home. >> i'm feeling happiness and joy that my house did not burn down and we can go back and the town is safe. my hometown is still standing. i love it. everybody is super excited. >> reporter: many evac

i am terry mcsweeney. just about an hour ago, most evacuees had gotten news that the evacuation was reduced to a warning. nbc bay area's alyssa goard is live. >> reporter: that's right, terry. many of the people here just finding out now, and many of them are from south lake tahoe and still deciding what to do. there are folks loading their cars up and getting ready to head out, and others are waiting here to be reunited with their pets at this particular shelter in reno, there are 240 people here and a majority are around lake tahoe. most have been evacuated for about a week, and some have bounced around cities in search for a place to say, and we spoke to tony mora he's from lake tahoe. he's ready to go. >> until we get settled in, and everybody is ready to go back to work, so we're excited. >> reporter: we actually got to go inside the shelter just a few hours ago. we're waiting outside now while the red cross figures out the next steps of how to communicate with -- how to communicate with the people who

i'm terry mcsweeney. >> i'm jessica aguirre. hopefully you like the cooler temps. you will get it again. looking at the bay bridge. summer is over. and parts of the bay area may get -- are you ready? rain. let's bring in our meteorologist. did i say rain? is that correct? >> you did. and it's one of the things where we will take what we can get. a couple of inches, we need it. right now, current temperatures in the 50s. tomorrow, cloudy conditions. the cooler weather is expected to remain in the area. we have a tropical frontal boundary coming in. it will push out some of the smoke. right now, air quality is good. satellite radar looks quiet. up here, we have a system forming. that will bring us a chance of seeing rain, primarily for the north bay. it could mean light rain and drizzle for the peninsula, the santa cruz mountains and monterey county, as well. we'll take what we can get. right now, a couple hundreds of an inch. we will have a closer look at the full forecast ahead in a few minutes. >> i like hearing that. >>> the clock is ticking for tens of thousands

terry mcsweeney, nbc bay area news. >> well, some business owners in the east bay are pushing back against contra costa county's new indoor vaccine mandate. now, required to ask customers for proof that they have been vaccinated or recently tested and once inside, you have to wear the mask. today, the chamber of commerce hosted a q&a with the county health officer. one store owner said the mandate feels like a punishment. >> also, getting into, you know, the -- the fall and winter holiday season. we did see, you know, last fall, the cases started going up after halloween. um, and then they really shot up after thanksgiving and christmas. um, so we really want to get our cases down. >> now, the doctor says too many school kids are contracting covid and hospital beds are just too full. once children, especially young adults, are vaccinated, he says that mandate could be lowered. >>> we are back in 60 seconds. ahead, he risked his life to save someone else's. >> what was going through my mind was just i need to get him out as soon as, like now. faster, the better because i think it was just s
