"today in the bay's" terry mcsweeney has the story. >> two bedrooms, two baths. >> reporter: this reals this unit priced at $1.5 million and expects it to sell in a matter of days. >> the median price right now for condominiums and $1.25 million and for free-standing houses is $1.75 million. >> reporter: a new study says more and more homes in much of the bay area are becoming out of reach for the middle class, defined as those making between $80 and $160,000. >> in san francisco you need to make upwards of $200,000 to actually afford a home in the lower segment of the housing market. these are supposed to be starter homes. >> reporter: the turner center report says in 2010 47% of the homes for sale were affordable to members of the middle class. in 2019 the number is down to 24%. in alameda and santa clara counties are steeper, in 2010 64% could afford a home. >> we have seen a wage growth of 23% over the last ten years but that pales in comparison to the appreciation in home prices, which is 183%. there's a few reasons. we haven't built enough homes. >> reporter: roughly half of bay

terry mcsweeney, "today in the bay." >>> new details this morning in the mass shooting ten days ago in downtown sacramento. authorities have identified another suspect. investigators say 27-year-old mtula payton was among five who opened fire. a pair of brothers are the only two in custody. police believe it all started as a dispute among rival gangs. >>> a former bay area college chancellor is back in the bay area ready to answer to criminal corruption charges. this is video from 2015. our investigative unit questioned him about using school funds for inappropriate expenses. in 2019, he suddenly resigned from his position as chancellor of santa matt community colleges. last week authorities accused him of accepting gifts from construction firms doing business with the district. he arrived yesterday from a trip outside the country and authorities arrested him. he later posted bail. his attorney recently told san mateo daily journey he did not do anything wrong, and that they look forward to contesting the charges. >>> new this morning, we are learning more about the two pedestrians str

terry mcsweeney explains. >> reporter: as reports of anti-asian crimes skyrocket nationwide and here in the bay area there's a change.org asking 911 calls not just be if english and in some areas in spanish but also in a host of asian languages. with the asian rights group they can't burn us all. >> i wanted to do something but i didn't really have a clear answer of what i could actually do. >> reporter: the petition says asian elders especially would benefit, those who often don't speak english and don't want to get involved with law enforcement. >> with this app, they won't have to talk to anybody. all they have to do is turn on the app and they can communicate. they can report things, all without, you know, being uncomfortable. >> reporter: a spokesman for the citizen app says the company welcomes the idea of multilanguage crime alerts but also is aware of how enormous this project would be. >> no easy feat because it has to be timely, it has to be fast and it has to be accurate. there are people who do want to help us go down this path. we welcome their involvement. >> reporter:

in san francisco, terry mcsweeney, nbc bay area news. >>> an update now from sacramento. of three people have been arrested following that mass shooting. none of the three are charged with the actual shooting right now. one of the men, 26-year-old dandre martin appeared in court this afternoon. a judge pushed back the hearing to give his attorney more time to look at evidence. his older brother, smiley martin, is also under arrest. a source tells the associate ma streamed a video on facebook showing off a gun just hours before the shooting. this picture is from when he was paroled in february while serving a ten-year sentence. despite opposition from law enforcement to have him released on parole. the mother of one of the victims is angry, but relieved to see that sacramento police are moving fast to make an arrest. >> you can't let people out of jail on a felony. i don't care about no pandemic or none of that stuff, you can't let them out. but you see what can happen. >> the third person arrested was found at the scene with a gun, charged with having that gun illegally.

. >> reporter: in san francisco, terry mcsweeney. bay area news. >>> a bizarre day in oakland with a man hiding in a crawl space. the bounty hunters tried taking man who is wanted, into custody. he ends up running from his house, jumping from roof to roof in the neighborhood to get away. he eventually runs into the basement of a house before going into the crawl space. he also then tried lighting the basement on fire. and he hit a police dog in a nose with a i'm that or maybe a stick. >> i never saw him. i walked out the back door and i seen some dude in my backyard. they were hot on his trail already so pretty. he barricaded himself in my basement. >> reporter: after more than an hour, police were able to get man out of crawl space and they did take him into custody. >>> reckless driving leads to a shooting in livermore. it happened yesterday. a man was trying to get the license plate number of a driver doing doughnuts on the street. the man drove away. the suspect who was doing doughnuts shot him. the victim is expected to be okay.
