here's nbc bay area's terry mcsweeney. terry? >> tonight we have been told that san francisco police sergeant brug let at that is being taken care of here at san francisco general hospital. the last official word we have is in critical condition. he was on duty, driving his city issued unmarked sedan when a tree came down on brotherhood way near the police department's shooting range. he was trapped inside. firefighters had to pry him out before rushing him to the hospital. tonight the police officer's association released a statement saying, the members of the sfpoa are praying for the speedy recovery of the sergeant, who received injuries while on duty. we're grateful to our san francisco firefighters who responded with great professionalism and care to assist our officer as well as the nurses and doctors who make up his medical care team. the storm also took two lives in the city. one, a woman walking on lincoln way near golden gate park. >> i saw the ambulance and the police officers come here and we walked by and saw the tra

thanks for joining us, i'm terry mcsweeney, gia is off. in the north bay crews are racing to protect a natural gas line as a mud slide continues to move. part of highway 101 in marin county is shut down now. >> reporter: you should know southbound 101 is closed from petaluma to novato while pg&e crews work to reroute the gas line nearby. north of novato pg&e crews ar working around the clock. the mud slide began near redwood boulevard. >> the hillside is still moving. >> we've been monitoring land movement. it's consistently moved off the mountain. >> reporter: pg&e says the erosion uncovered one of its two gas lines there that service 91,000 people in marin county. the utility is rerouting the natural gas away and into a temporary bypass. >> it's a detour around. got to build a new road around a hole. >> reporter: the mud slide is also next to a north marin water main. no gas or water service has been disrupted but people living nearby are also worried about something else. >> the traffic it's going to back up. >> reporter: concerned the

i'm terry mcsweeney. we begin with developing news out of lake tahoe. a man shot and killed in an apparent bar fight at a casino. it's a shooting with a santa cruz connection. it happened at the hard rock hotel and casino at south shore just over the nevada side of that state line. the shooting happened around 8:00 this morning after the suspect and victim were hanging out in the bar for hours. investigators say they got into an argument and that ended with one man shooting the other in the head. he died at the hospital. police caught up with the gunman on the california side of the border on highway 50 thanks to hard rock cafe workers. >> i would like to thank the hard rock casino for their cooperation and assistance and security and surveillance were instrumental in us quickly identifying the suspect and his vehicle, which ultimately led to his arrest. >>> the suspect is edwin julio delgado from santa cruz. a 26-year-old santa cruz woman was with him and she's being held on charges of dui and an accessory to murder after the fact. >>> the storm has pa

. >> and i'm terry mcsweeney. santa rosa high school where two teenagers were stabbed, one of them fatally reopened today for the first time since that attack. nbc bay area's jodi hernandez explains students returned with a very clear demand for the district. >> reporter: an emotional day as students returned to class for the first time since their classmate was fatally stabbed. but instead of attending class, most walked out in protest. >> you better say i'm so sorry, i failed your son. >> angry, scared and hurt, students walk out of class on their first day back to santa rosa's montgomery high school. they are demanding justice for jayden pienta, their classmate who was stabbed to death by another student last week. today they say they feel unsafe. >> that is -- i just don't want to come back anymore. i'm not coming back. the only reason i showed up is because i had a meeting. but i'm not coming back. >> reporter: 16-year-old pedro soto says he can't bear to return at all. he was with jayden as he laid dying. >>

the news at 11:00 starts right now, thank you for joining us, i am terry mcsweeney. >> and i am gia vang. >> happening this morning during the sunnyvale's troop hike at the park the victim was a mother of one of the scouts on that hike, trend boys natalie rivera is in cupertino with the latest. >> it is a tragedy and it is super where. >> reporter: that is how chief ranger describes what happened during a boy scout troop's height in cupertino, the mid- peninsular district got a call around 10:00 a.m. about a woman trapped under a tree. it happened on the trail, that are known as the pg&e trail. >> that trail is very hard to get to, so they respond with atvs. >> reporter: when rescue crews arrived, they found a people who had tried to lift the tree off the woman but she died at the scene after first responders administered medical aid. the chief ranger says it's unclear why the tree fell. but he does mention they have seen a lot of trees toppling over from saturated soil after recent storms. anderson says they haven't had any incidents like this at the park, though. but he's warning anyon
