that, alternatives to do that, i was asked to do that, i looked at it and did. >> i'm joined by terry o'neillesident of the national organization for women. terry, thank you for your time tonight. i want to say that i think your voice made a real difference in this entire conversation in this country, so i think what i really want to know and viewers want to know, does karen handle's resignation really change anything? what do you think? >> no, and ed, i stick by my prediction, look five years from now, i don't think the susan g. komen foundation will exist, not in the current form. they have become a political anti-abortion organization. karen handle's resignation in and of itself has not changed that. her resignation letter talks about how upset she is that her action was politicized, it was political, it was politically motivate and the blow-back against the komen foundation is an indication how strongly people in the country feel we don't want breast cancer politicized. that is what karen handle did. >> what about nancy brinker's role in this? didn't she lie about who was responsible? >>

terry o'neill is the president of the national organization for women, joins me again tonight. h, a lot is in the news, i appreciate you coming back. is the white house caving on this, what do you think? >> i certainly hope not. the catholic bishops tonight have to worry about getting elected or reelected. the fact of the matter is a politician who actively works to restrict birth control will pay a heavy price at the poll. >> some democrats are breaking with the white house, john kerry and others urging the president to compromise. why is women's health being politicized. why is this happening in 2012? >> it's striking to me how many male politicians are willing to use women's health as a political football. i would like to have a meeting with senator kerry and find out what he's thinking about. my understanding in fact is that catholic bishops have been in the capital, meeting with elected official, elected officials have not been meeting with the heads of women's organizations. i think any senator who intends to support any kind of legislation, for example, to restrict women'

legal person i have a vote and opinion and a body which is my right to control. >> let's turn to terry o'neill, president of the national organization for women. terry, good to have you with us tonight. this is essentially, as i read it, the government mandating to a doctor that he must perform a procedure on a woman. do i have that right? >> yes, a medically unnecessary procedure. on a woman. in fact, ed, a number of women have been posting on blogs and on comments that their own experience with this procedure because sometimes in rare cases it is medically warranted, even when your doctor is doing it for your own good it's an unpleasant experience, often, often painful, it is not pleasant. to take that experience and make it state mandated, even when it's medically inappropriate, there are a number of women who have begun to say let's look at the state definition in fact the new fbi definition of rape. and that would include vaginal penetration against the will without the consent of the woman. now -- >> is it rape in your opinion? >> i think it is. >> you do think it's rape? >> i think it i

>>> joining me is terry o'neill, president of the national organization for women. rry, thanks for your time tonight. what is your reaction to state representative lyons comment about the need for this ultrasound bill? >> you know, that is exactly -- i think he has exactly expressed what all of the supporters of the these ultrasound bills really intend. and that is they intend to humiliate and shame women as those women make the decision to terminate a pregnancy. in fact, i heard one of the best -- the best nicknames for these bills is the ritual humiliation law. and whether or not the bill says the woman has a choice of viewing the ultrasound or whatever, she does not have a choice under any of these laws. and the purpose of these laws is to do two things, first to humiliate and shame her, and have the doctor give her a lecture about how difficult a decision this is and she needs to think it through, fast she hasn't already. but secondly, the other part of the bill is intended to drive up the costs dramatically. the vast majority, over 90% of abortions are performed

i am joined by terry o'neil, president of the national organization for women. karen finley, unless nbc political analyst and former communications director for the democratic national convention, and jimmy williams, and as in d.c. contributor and former democratic senate staffer. great to have all three of you with us tonight. i want to get to an issue that has fallen by the wayside as of late. it did come up tonight, and jobs. what do we do about putting people to work? the issue came up in discussion in the form of the automobile industry. in michigan this is a big story because it saved a lot of jobs. general motors is number one. a lot of blue collars are at work because of what the president has done. rex santorum tonight and mitt romney got into its over the automobile loan. here it is. >> he supported the folks on wall street in bill out wall street, was all for it. when it came to the autoworkers, he said no. that to me is not a consistent principle position. i had one and believe in markets, not just when they are convenient for me. >> nice try. i wrot

. >> terry o'neil, is president obama that extremists on this issue? what do you think? >> the crowd did not want to talk about birth control because a loser issue for all of the men on that panel. one of the things that really irks me, i guess, about this claim that the birth control issue is not about women, not about birth control but about the religious freedom of religious institutions. let's be clear, 90% of catholic women who are sexually active use birth control at some point. the bishops and evangelicals too are not able to sell their dogma to their women. what they are insisting is that the government should help them do what they can do. the government should prevent women from accessing birth control because these priests in these evangelical preachers cannot convince are on women to stop using birth control. that is a violation of the wall between church and state. for mitt romney and the other republicans to say that somehow what a mandate that birth control simply be covered as a part of an ordinary part of preventive health care, somehow that is a violati
