(terri laughing) (cheerful music playing) they're not intentional, they're just residual things that they do, (gentle music continues) which makes it very confusing. as i felt more comfortable with her, i would hold her hand, touch her head and i would ask her, could she squeeze my hand? could she blink her eyes? could she follow some instructions? none of that resulted in a response, even though i did it over and over and over again. didn't happen. this is ms. schiavo's, the ct scan. what do you see? what's happening there? - your ventricles aren't supposed to be filled that much with fluid. - what's all this stuff? - a lot of dead brain tissue. - a lot of dead brain tissue. - yeah. - yeah. the scan of ms. schiavo's brain showed that all of the brain itself had become liquified, including parts of the brain that are expressly responsible for cognition, for hearing, for seein

the terri schiavo case loomed large when i was there.wspaper journalism, by the way, why do you think the case became such an inflection point for a bigger cultural debate? >> yeah, it's a great question. when i first covered it, it was an anonymous tip to go into the courtroom. i didn't know anything about it. i think the family drama there, with the case was about, lots of other reporters started to come. it became such a bigger issue. we don't like to talk about it. who gets to make those decisions? it really became a political issue. everyone saw what they wanted to in this case and they used this case to push their own issues, whether that was antiabortion or right to life, right to die. there were so many issues at play here. everyone kind of used the case to show what they wanted to see. >> you know, anita, for those who did not know, then florida governor jeb bush actually enacted a law to have a feeding tube inserted for terri schiavo to continue her life. that law was deemed to be unconstitutional subsequently by the florida su

take us through the process of this documentary. >> but the terri schiavo case was a seismic moment inwe re-examined the case and we go through the whole story of this intense family drama. but we also want to connect the dots and show how the case has had a lasting impact on our political climate and our culture wars today. i think that was our sort of mission that we set out to do when we started making the documentary. >> what was it, personally, for you, about's story, the issues within her story that made you want to tell it? >> to me, i think this case brings up some really profound questions at the intersection of faith and politics. it asks how much should the government be involved in our private lives, and it also asks who gets to decide if a life is worth living. and those really provocative questions are at the core of our human experience. they were sort of our guiding questions as we started making the film. >> what was it like as a filmmaker to watch some of this emotional footage, to be there for these emotional interviews. we were taking a listen to her brother,'s brot

really unprecedented legislation that was geared towards a single individual to prevent, you know, terry schiavo they were thwarted by the courts, by the judicial branch. one of the last things, political legacies of the case, is how, in the wake of terry's death, the same groups really mobilized and, you know, ramped up their efforts to change the courts and change the composition of the courts, and get, you know, conservative judges appointed. you know, we're still experiencing the facts of that transformation today. >> i was going to say, we're very much living with a long tale of that and that specifically, you sort of touched on it but i think it's important to underline here the abortion rights movement, the anti choice movement, and the way that that really dovetailed with a political action we surround this case. >> yeah, you hear it in the film, you know, the right to reproductive rights and the right to die are sort of two sides of the same coin because they're both based on the same constitutional principle, which is that right to privacy, which also undergirds, you know, same sex mar
