meteorologist terry swails joins us now with a flooding threat that could stretch four days. >> looks like a boundary will get established on northern iowa. it may be for several days to come. will be raining all the time but when it does rain it could come down heavy. there are places in eastern iowa that have had 47 and 40 inches of rain. the ground is northern counties. so flash flood watch is in effect and that is out until 7:00 on thursday. for the moment the raiders are quiet but thunderstorms have developed northwest of mason city. those will developed and move east southeast and cut across northern iowa. 11:00 the storm is just starting to work its way to northeast iowa and by two or three clock in the morning you can see those raising the farther northern counties. looks like it will be scattered between three and 6:00 in the morning. during the morning hours they should diminish a little bit and move onto wisconsin. the bottom line is this is the first volley and there will be of our viewing area for the next 2 to 3 days. the rest of us in the central and south should stay d

right now we are talking about the crest and where the river level is because go to meteorologist terry swails.>> deep big news is -- the big news is the river has crested and gone down a little bit. another important factor is the crest was about a foot below what we were anticipating yesterday ticket officially came in this morning at 21.97 feet. have come down about 2/10 of a foot so that is progress but we have got a long ways to go and we continue to be in major flooding in cedar rapids. now we are at the 21.9 level. you can see eventually the river starts to tell off but only slowly for the next 24 to 48 hours. by the time we get to 2:00 i am wednesday we're out there 20 feet but beyond that dish but how many two friday afternoon we wen eventually later on in the week the crest passes by where back down to about 10 feet and that will be a big change rest assured. now we have a different perspective of the flooding. we been trying to determine who has been flooded and who has not. here you are looking at the river from south to north so here's downtown cedar rapids. we put the next pictur

wanted to give you a drone's >> terry swails has an update on the weather first forecast. >> the river has crest the up around vinton now. it's beginning to fall there. the crest is close to palo, and this was a picture that was taken there earlier this afternoon thanks to our cbs 2 drone. there are some residents impacted in the palo area. here is another view of the floodwaters creeping up on this house around palo. then from there of course is all goes downstream and will head towards cedar rapids. we are expecting our crest at 23-foo around 7:00 on tuesday morning. right now the stage is already up to 21 feet here in cedar rapids, and as you can see on these other crests, that now makes that the second highest crest on the cedar river in cedar rapids. and on our hydrograph here you can see that the river continues to rise. we will hit that 23-foot level and then stay at about 20 feet in this range up around here for 60 consecutive hours. in the cedar rapids area. the other river of concern is the wapsi in anamosa. the crest is expected at 24 feet wednesday morning around 1:00. curr

chief meteorologist terry swails joins us right now with the latest. >> the first thing we will talk about is a severe thunderstorm wch the morning. for some parts of our viewing area is in the far northwest. in waterloo and all my that general region here that's what we have severe thunderstorm watch until 2 am. i don't know if those will last until 2 am. there have been no reports of severe weather anywhere in northeastern iowa or in the central part of the state. but i am more concerned about is the potential for heavy rains. we do have a flash flood watch in effect tonight for the northern two thirds of our viewing area. thunderstorms have been developing up in the north and they will be increasing in the next several hours. they have the potential to dump heavy rains with heavy moisture . here's a quick look at the radar. you can see some of the storm scattered across our northern counties. the heaviest ones are developing in howard county and these will work their way across the northern part of our that's the region that's most at risk for flash flooding tonight. the rest of t

let's go to meteorologist terry swails for a look at your weather first forest parts of our viewing area and flash flooding is occurring here look at these flash flood warning's that are in effect. they include chickasaw, butler, reamer and floyd counties. some of these warnings will be out until three or four clock in the morning. we have seen heavy rains in parts of floyd and northern butler counties. this is northeastern iowa and this is allamakee. there's now in the southwest you can see another strong cell that is located to the north of sumner. this is located to the north of highway 20. this storm tracking to the north of be around hawkeye, west union and claremont between now and 11:00 tonight. heavy rainfall is the primary threat. additional storms are expected around eastern iowa as we go to the nighttime hours. a flash flood watch is out to the north. we are expecting more heavy rain and flooding problems around the northern parts of the viewing area. >> we have breaking news related to the weather. firefighters in charles city are going door to door to warn residents that eva

chief meteorologist terry swails is here. >> not so much 2008. i want to sipt why this is happening this particular year and what we got is a graphic here which shows the rain that's occurred in the past seven days. and where you see some purples and reds there, across either central iowa, that's where there was as much as two to seven inches of rain. that's bad enough. but what happened, we had rain after rain. we get the three to five inch iowa was exceptionallysaturated. in the dekora, they had 16 inches of rain already in the year. that broke the record. the bottom line is when the ground is that saturated and you throw the huge rains there, that's when it gets worse. everybody went from minor flooding to major flooding in almost 24 hours' time. 12, 13 inches of rain in a 24 hour period. >> in particular in the late september period. things came just ripe for this type of situation. meteorologyally, a lot of things happened two or three months ago leading to what's occurring tonight. another graphic we have to show we think it will be 12 feet

terry swails joins us with the latest. >> earlier today, a lot of ingredients were in place for the potentially severe weather in eastern iowa but one important thing has happened a lot. that is so far keeping that at bay, some warm temperatures. we have an inversion or a capping inversion and that is fording thunderstorms from getting full blown around going to see much in the way of troubles but here is the watch. you can see it is roughly south of highway 20. it includes cascade, backed down toward iowa city, washington and synchrony. that is out until 10:00. i think there is an excellent chance that will be canceled as we go through the evening hours. here is the radar and you can't see too much happening. there are showers and storms cutting across the northeast and a few more down over our western and southern counties. into south-central and southeastern iowa. going in closer, you can see a strong story around natoma. that will not impact our area and these other storms in the northeast are not surface-based. they are behind that front so they may produce brief heavy rain but nothing too
