elon musk with tesla, the ceo of tesla, said wait a minute, first of all, you didn't charge it all thebroder said listen, i went as far as i was told was necessary according to the people at tesla. so it's a bit of he says, she says there. and the other issue is he took a slight detour when he got to manhattan, and tesla is saying listen, you didn't drive straight to your destination. you took a detour which adds some miles on there. so ultimately, what people are looking at, they're saying if i get into the model "s," or any electric car, what is my range going to be? do i definitely have 285 miles, as tesla says? the fact of the matter is, it depends on a number of conditions. it depends on how cold it is. today it's about 38 degrees out here. that's not going to have a huge impact in terms of draining the battery. how much do you use for heating the car, the environment inside of the cabin? how heavy is it? all of those factor in. so, that's an epa rating of 285 miles. the next leg, becky, is 203 miles from here after we charge up over the next hour. >> it takes a full hour? >> you

we are pulling into the tesla store. just outside of boston. we're in natick, massachusetts. as we pull in, one thing stands out about the drive. the tesla model s in terms of performance and what it delivers on a long drive, it does meet expectations. you have to passion -- you have manage your expectations. this is the 85-per kilowatt battery in this tesla, this has a range of 265 miles. we did the longest stretch, a stretch of more than 200 miles between delaware and a recharging station in massachusetts -- in connecticut, and it performed as expected. the bottom line, the tesla model s, while it is primarily a vehicle that people will be driving in smaller areas, in cities where they know they're only going to be driving fewer than 100 miles, the bottom line, on a long drive the tesla model s does perform. that's the story from here outside of massachusetts. we complete our tesla model s test drive. >> not a bad assignment to re-create the test drive. i miss roadtrips. >>> in other news this morning, herbalife's fourth quarter profit rose 1

we have tesla numbers out. sandra? >> right now, liz, seeing that they did meet on earnings -- sorry, they missed on earnings per share. a loss was expected, but they reported a bigger loss than analysts of 65 cents a share, but a loss of 53 # cents a share anticipated. stocks moving higher. revenues beat at $306 million for the scwawrt. the street looked for 298 million. the company's also, by the way, touting that revenue number as a 5 00% quarter over quarter increase. that would be fourth quarter compared to the third quarter, but that's what we have now. a miss on the earnings front, a loss of 65 crepts a share, and a beat on the revenue. liz: okay. we have to point out a couple things here. the "new york times" has done a review of the tesla model s, and television -- it was heavily criticized or supported, depending on your side, but the fact that the stock is still very close, if not besting its 52-week high at the moment, david. david: indeed. this, again, is not an earnings because they have been losing money

thank you. >> tesla reporting earnings after the bell. stuck covering near all-time highs. off the tesla test drives, the three things that investors need to 2340e know, what are those three things. ? >> it has to do with earnings, production and what we see in terms of orders coming in for the new model s with the new pricing structure. let's start with earnings and expectation. they are expected to post a loss of 53% a share. but what's the cash flow rate? we know about a month and a half ago, ceo saying they were cash flow positive for certain few weeks and cash flow positive from there on. what the rate of growth from there? 2013 model will be key. what do they expect? they still expect to deliver 20,000 of them? that's the target they set out and they are producing at that rate wab because then it comes in case. what is the backlog looking like? at one point up around 15 to 20,000 reservations that were there. have they started to bring down that backlog as they increase production and how much has the price increased impacted orders? has it slowed down as they have in

according to tesla, this is the latest. the gps and computer records show the "times" writer drove the car in circles in a parking lot and when he called to the tow there was still charge in the battery. new allegations come on a blog entry on the tesla website called a most peculiar test drive. the ceo doesn't post the data it makes a convincing argument that what you read in "the new york times" and what tesla's computer show are not the same thing which is a polite way of saying someone is lying. we weren't there and don't have access to the records so we can't say who. this is a disaster for someone. what's interesting is tesla said the writer turned on the car's heater. the writer says he didn't. heat in electric cars is a problem. nissan had to rethink the heater in the leaf because electric car motors don't make excess heat to use to warm the cabin. they have to use coils like space heaters or toasters and that use as tremendous amount of electricity. you can significantly reduce your range by just trying to keep war
