you look at tesla and it looks like tesla is going to survive. >> the big difference seems to be for tesla and established electric car companies and i'm talking about nissan with the leaf and other things. there is finally a real market for the cars. people are actually willing to spend $60,000 for a model s. people are willing to spend $30,000 for the smaller cars in enough numbers which makes sense. that wasn't true when we were talking about who killed the electric car. you had a bunch of expensive test models. >> it is not a huge market, but it is a market. it is a weird market. you mentioned the leaf and volt. tesla actually sold more cars in the first quarter of the year than gm sold of the volt or nissan sold of the leaf. that is amazing. tesla, this past weekend, announced they would stop or they would not make the cheapest version of the model s car that they planned to make when it would be $60,000. they decided not to do it because 4% of the people placing orders for the model s actually wanted the cheap one. they wanted the more expensive one. they have turned into the n

so that's the program that tesla is announcing.teresting to see, maria, how much this improves sales or orders for the model s. >> that's a pretty big deal. most people, that's what they worry about, that the value of their car when they buy it is going to go down. >> right. and they're making that guarantee. they're saying it will be at least worth the same residual value as an s model from mercedes. >> but what does that do to margins? can you make that guarantee, really, and also make money? >> well, you know, you have to look at, i haven't crunched the numbers, maria, but clearly they would not be making this guarantee if they did not believe they were going to be able to hold those margins. the key here, though, for tesla, can they bring that monthly payment down under $500. we've talked for some time, maria. that's the magic line in terms of people who are out there in the market looking for a particular vehicle. if i can get the monthly payment under $500, then i'm interested in it. and that's what tesla is trying to do here

tesla here. out a long anticipated announcement that had moved the stock earlier this week by the tune of 16% or so. phil lebeau's got the details. phil? >> i'm sorry, melissa, tesla is starting a lease to own program. and essentially what this is going to be is for the model s car. here is how it's going to work. u.s. bank and wells fargo will finance the first 10% down payment for a model s. tesla says after that happens, for people who are credit worthy, their out of pocket monthly expense -- this is important, not just your monthly payment, but your out of pocket monthly expense when you factor in the cost of fuel, insurance, deappreciation will be less than $500 a month. that's an important distinction, because it sounds like the monthly payment is still going to be over $500 a month. after 36 months, if you have decided this is not right for me, i want to unload my model s, they are guaranteeing that the residual value on that model s will be equal to the residual value of mercedes s class.

here's the math according to tesla.epending which state you live in you're going to get an ev incentive, $53 a month is what you're going to save. not paying $5 a gallon for a gas-powered vehicle saves you $284 a month. if you use the model s for business, there's another $227 you're going to be saving. and then tesla says you will save money by using the carpool or not having to look for a gas station and filling up your old gas-powered car. they say it's $100 an hour. that brings your monthly savings to $851. you take that off of what the payment is every month, which is $1,320, and you come up with $469. that is the net effective cost according to tesla for owning a model s. remember, tesla is not saying that you're going to be writing a check every month for just $469. they're saying that your effective cost over time when you factor in the savings will be under $500. brian, that's the math behind the it isla model s financing. back to you. >> phil lebeau, car guru and now math wiz. thank you very much. up next, the
