tesla is a company that is always in the spotlight.y just reported record sales in the fourth quarter. they're predicting huge growth this year. this week the founder and ceo elon musk sat down to talk to us in the wake of a big recall. about 29,000 of the wall charger adapters for the tesla model s have been recalled, because they can overheat and possibly cause a fire. now, tesla says that it did an over the year software upgrade to fix the problem but are sending out new chargers as an extra precaution. this recall comes on the heels of a handful of cars in tesla cars following some crashes this fall that led the national highway traffic safety administration to investigate nap investigation is ongoing. elon musk says, look, he feels his company tesla is getting far too much mnegative attention arguing there are far more fires and gasoline powered cars which is the case. we sat down to talk to him about all of the headlines and also what is ahead for tesla. can you thaunds although electric cars aren't a new technology, it's a new m

is that a call option here for tesla for this year? >> i do.nd the last time i was on here, and you know, i said there was downside risk, one of the things was, because the company has been a supply constraint, not demand. demand is coming from north america, from europe. china, they were still working through some issues. i think there's been significant progress just in the last few weeks since the last time i was on here, that is an upside option where you could start seeing, you know, a start of tens of thousands of model s orders coming from china, which could exceed everyone's expectations because i don't think people have been thinking about that. i didn't put it into a note. but i think it's upside. >> ben, thank you. >> thanks, guys for having me. >> ben kallo, r.w. baird. ben said this is a trading call. sentiment has changed on the stock. that's going to be a driver. >> he's nailed it in the past. and he's probably nailed it again. look at the stock reaction today. i love tesla right here. even up 15%, which usually isn't my style. b

no tesla vehicles are being physically recalled by tesla. that's true. the vehicles are not being brought back in. he then goes on to tweet the word "recall" needs to be recalled. as that news was coming out a short time later, tesla then raised its guidance for the fourth quarter, its revenue guidance has been increased by 20%. the company sold 6900 model s vehicles in the fourth quarter. that's an increase of 900 compared to the previous guidance of 6,000. as a result, shares of tesla up almost 12% today. there has already been one upgrade from baird. that's the story involving tesla. >>> now let's talk about boeing and the 787 dreamliner. shares of boeing down 1%. certainly not down as much as it was earlier today. the story here is that a japan airlines 787 reported the lithium ion battery on board a plane that was parked at a gate was malfunctioning. j.a.l. reported smoke coming from the parked 787 in tokyo. no passengers or crew were on board at the time. j.a.l. says one of the eight cells, the lithium ion battery pack cells in the dreamliner had f

the model s and tesla is the only -- tesla is the only manufacturer to have no deaths or serious injuriesto have a car that is safer than the model s. >> elon -- >> and i think that was a key factor and then also were the sales that in norway, for example, we have the highest sales per capita of any country in the world. in fact, for a few months in the fourth quarter, we actually were the most sold car in norway. number two was the vw gulf. >> and that's certainly something that the market is rewarding you guys for today. they like the performance obviously. i just want to go back to this point because some of the investors that i speak with about the sales figures say they didn't remember seeing a revenue projection when you're talking about beating that projection by 20%. obviously the deliveries are above what people were expecting, but can you comment on that language at all? >> i guess in our case we have basically one product, so for us delivers and revenue are very, very similar things. there's not a meaningful difference between the two, . we don't have a wide range of products.

but today tesla's impresario called for a recall of the word recall. i thought it was the most clever thing i read today. and tesla's revenues will be sharply higher than expected. boy, did that take people by surprise. no wonder the stock went up by 22 bucks. i even as i have said, if the equity is more of a cult because it's hard to value than say ford or gm which added a big dividend end to. now of course not everyone is worth having faith in. plenty of companies haven't rewarded you for having a conviction. i don't lament that i put so much faith in tim kin, the steel company which smoked my faith with the worst preannouncement down side in the last game. and three months ago, would it it have hurt him to put more emphasis on the short term? misplaced faith. but here's the bottom line. consistent winners like regeneron and david pyatt, google's and tesla, executives who over and over again have demonstrated they'll reward your faith should we not bank on them? they're the coaches with the history of winning seasons. and they deserve your trust. dav
