it's to make a point about tesla and the broader phenomenon. tesla is now going to build a battery company in nevada. how do they come to nevada? well, there was a big competition that was held to decide what state tesla was going to come. it was not really a formal competition, but in effect it was a kind of competition and guess who was competing? nevada, california, and texas. the competition was for how many goodies can we give to tesla to entice them to come to the state? things like a free road, which is probably the smallest, cut rate electricity for a decade, meaning they will get a better rate than other tax payers, and no taxes for something like 20 years. we can talk about this in the question-and-answer period. i will try to probe the steeper. i'm not making a point about whether or not it's good or bad to exempt people from taxes. i can make that point -- it is good -- but the overall point is this looks like tesla has got an inside line to the nevada legislature. this is an example of the nevada legislature and the other legislatu

finally there's the tesla model s.hich has an average transaction price of $93,000, it's on record sales in the u.s. in the month of september. the most recent data we have for tesla. look at the breakdown of high-end vehicles and how the sales have done this year. anything priced between $50,000 and $75,000 up 32%. then if you thought that's got to be it. anything over $100,000 sales of those models up 17.2%. and as we take a look at shares of tesla, we're pointing this out because the tesla model s which has a transaction price average of $93,000, guys, it's not uncommon to find people who are buying a model s for over $100,000. the bottom line is this. the demand for these expensive cars has never been greater. that's where the industry is pushing right now because those are the greatest margins. and clearly people can afford this because of 0% financing and leasing which is incredibly popular right now for these higher end models. >> would a loaded explorer be under 50,000, do you know? >> no. not if it's fully loa

phil said that sales of the tesla model s would stay hot and that all eyes would be watching for the release of the model x. he was half right there while model s sales were strong the release of model x got pushed back to next year. what does phil have in predicting for 2015? let's take a look. >> reporter: record auto sales? probably not in 2015 but the industry should push sales close to or above 17 million vehicles for the first time since 2001. here are three things to expect as sales surge. first, cheap gas. the national average is now well under $3 a gallon. most analysts believe relatively cheap gas will be with us for much of next year. how low could it go? the energy department is predicting a national average of $2.94 a gallon. even better it could be much lower than that. low gas prices means you can expect another big year for suvs. in 2015 suvs and crossovers will stay red hot partially because several new utility vehicles will hit show rooms and stir the market. at the same time fuel efficiency still attracts buyers and the newest suvs are getting better mileage than b
