steven wanted to know more specifically, why texas, why does this all happen in texas? it have happened somewhere else, is a way to put it? >> populism was not restricted to texas. it was a national movement and it was strong in the midwest, in the mountain west especially. it's hard to say exactly why texas ended up being so unique. i think most scholars suggest that texas being still a relatively frontiers state, and of course the birthplace of the alliance was out there in the western cross, riding out there, the area west of fort worth, which was just sort of emerging from each frontier state. i think the idea maybe was that people who ventured out there were maybe a little less bound by tradition, maybe a bit more free thinkers in some ways. certainly sam johnston, lyndon johnson's grandfather, fit this description. he ran cattle. he was a cattleman and ran cattle herds up and down the trail to kansas during the heyday, and took his wife with him. i think they may be tended to work outside the box a little bit. also, texas was not quite as enthrall into what stephe
