we begin with a life-threatening storm bearing down on the texas coast right now. hurricane beryl lashing southern texas with strong winds and bringing the threat of storm surge that could reach as high as 7 feet. rainfall up to 15 inches is possible in some areas, and disaster has been declared for more than 100 counties. beryl regains strength and intensifies back into a category 1 storm before it reached texas with maximum winds reaching up to 80 miles per hour. schools in the houston area will be closed as the storm may cause flash flooding throughout the day. and this is the same storm that left behind a path of destruction in the caribbean where at least nine deaths have been linked to the hurricane. let's get an update on beryl's path now with nbc meteorologist angie lassman who is tracking it all for us. good morning, angie. >> good morning, frances. we're hours away from the landfall likely for hurricane beryl. the hurricane conditions already overspreading parts of the texas coast. we do have the winds up to 80 miles per hour. as you mentioned, this happen

cnn meteorologist derrick van dam is on the texas coast for us, what are you seeing there? derek yeah. >> pam, we've just gotten the latest information from the national hurricane center 5:00 p.m. eastern update they and they are indicating that this is still a tropical storm. this is good news because tropical storm beryl is running out of time to strengthen, but there are signs that it is doing so. in fact latest information from the nhc indicates that storm surge here where i'm standing and along the central texas coastline already one foot above normal high tide values for this moment in time tropical-storm-force winds extend to 115 miles out from the center of tropical storm beryl, that means tropical storm force winds will reach this location and port lavaca within the next coming hours, we've had these intermittent outer rain bands from beryl already inundating us with water. now, there are a you positive's going forward. this will be a fast-moving storm. it is also a storm that's going to coincide with low tide. so that could minimize the storm surge potential. but
