texas and the texas experience. the economy in texas is humming.t's one of the few bright spots across states, across this country. is he going to tout that and say i know how to run things. i know how to free up business. i understand how business runs, i'm a chief executive. that's in the positive category. as well as social conservatives, bill, we saw the big prayer event this weekend. had a big crowd. and i think he scores big and positive there. downside is it is august. and he -- he could, i say could, run the risk of being the fred thompson of this race. remember how everybody was waiting for thompson to get n july of 2008. turns out that july was a little late. and the money and the excitement really didn't ever show up for fred thompson. it remains to be seen whether -- we'll see rick perry be able to overcome the fact that he doesn't really have much of an organization yet. and it's not clear that the old bush money, all those bush pioneers and rangers bundlers of big cash are going to go toward rick perry. that's where he is right now. >

the texas economy is growing at twice the rate of the national rate and home prices have remained prettyht say, i don't know, he's doing a pretty good job. >> well, i think that governor perry has been very lucky. and it's so interesting, because what he likes to call the texas miracle is probably one of the biggest political myths that we're living today. let's look at the facts. when governor perry came into office, unemployment in texas was at 4.2. it is now at 8.2. that is not the right direction in terms of job creation in texas. secondly, most of the jobs that have been created in texas have been government jobs. they have been because an increase in military spending. the same government that perry loves to rail against every chance he gets. and thirdly, a lot of those jobs have also been because of the rise in gas prices. none of those things have anything to do with what governor perry has done, but, of course, he likes to take credit for it. and i think what you're going to see now is a lot of light being shed on what the reality is in texas. >> well, obviously, critics will sa

texas definitely stronger than the national economy. let's talk about unemployment. employment stands at 8.2%. nearly a full percentage point lower than the national average. here is the interesting part. since the recession ended, texas added about 265,000 jobs. that's a huge chunk of the total of some 700,000 jobs created nationwide since the end of the recession in june of 2009. texas also has the highest percentage of workers making minimum wage and the highest percentage of workers working without health insurance. that's interesting since perry wants texas to opt out of medicare and is proposed that states be allowed to opt out of social security. candy crowley is the anchor of "state of the union" every sunday morning on cnn. she joins me from iowa. thank you for joining us. the polls say president obama is weak on the economy, rick perry is going to run on the fact that he's strung on the economy. how is this going to play with conservatives, with independents, for whom the major issue right now is the economy? >> sure. well, it is going to play well with cons

texas. what they've done with the economy. was him, if i'm running for president and i'm rick perry from texas, i would talk about the you asked me my mother's maiden name? i say look what we did with the economy in texas. >> the argument back at that is that it is easier in a state like texas. than it is in many other states. would you accept that? >> i look at the last two years, an example of a smaller percentage of the economy than a decade ago. it is not just because of natural resources and things like that. in every case, there is exceptions and nuances that i think overall, if you look at even in the last couple years, texas having led the way, new ways almost greater than the rest of us combined. if you can apply that toward putting more people to work in our country, i know in wisconsin, we're much better off in the national unemployment rate. certainly at 7.6, 7.8% unemployment, that is unacceptably high. >> and at a time when the national figure is slightly dropped, yours went up. so that gives you an illustration
