amarillo is in the center of the texas panhandle.e affectionately call ourselves the capital city of the texas panhandle. we are approaching 200,000 people in this next census area -- census. that's a marker for us. it's one of the most unique things, travel around and talk to other mayors, our superpower here in the city of amarillo is that we think regionally. while we do have geographic boundaries that define how many people live inside our city, we truly don't think that way. we think regionally. we think of world communities that belong to us. we are their city. right now, we are standing in the historic depot. it's significant because when you think about building the entire city of amarillo, the materials for building our city came through this depot. they arrived by rail right here. our city has grown. we started as a farming, agricultural town. now we are an urban center for the texas panhandle of 500,000 people. none of that could have happened without this location being right here by the rail. so much of our industry and

what we have in this image is kansas city newspaper with the wonder city of the texas panhandle. citydea that this amarillo , it is something that today sounds a little old-fashioned. we also have this blueprint above that is by an architect that i think deserves his own study. we have an image of the united states with the city of amarillo larger than any other city and showing the networking of amarillo as a crossroads for the united states. and you can see that the santa fe railroad is just one straight shot of a line. it is quicker than even to dallas. houston isn't even on this map. the idea that this network is what this whole show is about, it would be close for a number of reasons based on the cattle trade. these objects tell that story. we are standing in front of another object. this is a reproduction, a that was born in the kansas city area and studied for a few areas. when he didn't get the raise he outed, he decided to start in amarillo and found his new firm. he was in amarillo citizen and built so much of the landscape in this area. also of the skyline of amarillo.

we are in the far western region of the texas panhandle, unfortunately driving a bit on interstate rightnow, but only because route 66 was obliterated here in the 1970's. we are going to get off at exit zero visit one of the coolest and ghost towns along route 66, glenn rio. we are going to cross the freeway here now and get onto little strands of old route 66, the last strand in texas going west and the first going east. with that in mind we are going , to stop at the first last motel, which is right on the state line. just like the name implies, it was the first or last thing you saw depending on which way you were going. we are standing inside the longhorn cafÉ, which was built around 1951. in glenn rio. this is where everyone had their first or last meal in texas. it was an exceptionally busy and successful cafÉ because it was conveniently located in the middle of nowhere. people could fill up their bellies, fill up the tanks in their cars, and if they were tired they could get a room at the motel in the back. but either way glenn rio was a , happening town in the 1950's. we had a lo

panhandle plains historical museum. today, or that to share a little bit about -- i would like to share about the history of native americans and the culture of native americans in texasit's very appropriate to begin with the contemporary. i am standing next to a magnificent piece of sculpture by the noted artist alan houser, who was apache. and he was born in oklahoma. he was a descendent of removed's band who was to oklahoma after geronimo and his band was captured. he later became a terrific artist. as you can see, one of the main foci of this particular piece is a native american on horseback . and that is truly the story of native americans in the southern plains region and in the panhandle especially. when horses became available to them in the 1600s, particularly the comanches and some of the apache people, they were able to tradersorses from the in santa fe. stealing some of them as well. they were able to utilize the environment much more efficiently because they could cover much longer distances. the bison hunting culture really became the strong suit, the highlight of the area, and it became a culture of mobility. what i'm going to do today is to share with

history is texas, texas, texas, but one of the things we talked about this show, we pitched it as like looking about rather than always looking within. we are in the panhandle-plains museum and the museum is the largest historical museum in the state of texas if you count it by the number and the exhibition title is cattle, cowboys and culture, kansas city and the amarillo building in urban west. the full-time curator here and i are natives to kansas city. we were always interested in why this place felt so familiar to us. michael started looking at the number of objects in the panhandle-plains permanent collection that related to kansas city. it turns out there were over 1,000 objects on a database that he pulled up. we looked at the objects and we found a good array of -- a variety of objects we thought we needed to do a show that told and sterhood of amarillo kansas city. this closeness is basically around the train system and cattle industry that drew those two cities together. we tell the story of that in this show. in 1870, cattle being driven by the cowboys, meaning walked across the plains, like for example from texas to montana. so for example long
