we also provide and house the archives of the state of texas which is the historical record of the state of texas going back to the republic of texas days and earlier than that. what you are going to see today is a collection of some of the most iconic and important documents from our collection that document texas freedom and the struggle of various groups in texas for freedom equality and civil rights. today we are in the state archives and library building in austin, texas. this is an original portrait of steven austin who is considered father of anglo colonization in texas. we believe this portrait was painted from life before his death in 1836. this is a very important map that was researched and compiled by austin. if he and his father knew that if texas was to be successful that they would have to have a good map of the area. and so he worked with the tanner publishing company in philadelphia to create this map. the earliest one was in 1830. they issued several editions the last one being in 1836. this is an original imprint of that 1836 map. you will notice that it still has the

think today we forget that there's this connection to how we developed in the country and in the state of texas in particular. we really think of it as being a 20th century state and area with large cities inland. but if it were not for the gulf coast, if it was not for this transportation and viability of bringing in ships and so forth we wouldn't exist. and in galveston, you have to think about it as being the point of creation in texas for what we see as a modern state and a modern part of the country. [ klaxon blaring ] >>> in 1917, the submarine force was battling public opinion as well as the enemy. folks thought submarines were unchivalrous, that war under the sea was unfair and inhuman. if we paid much attention to these emotional protests we wouldn't have had that old but you have to s-boat and the long range fleet types that made up our small submarine force in 1941. when all of a sudden 25 peaceful years were put to the test. the small submarine force based at pearl harbor was not attacked, a mistake that soon had the japanese wishing they had been a little more thorough. >> this is

the texas state holiday occurred by an african-american representative by the name of al edwards of houston texas. he remembered as a kid growing up the celebration of juneteenth so he introduced a law that -- making that a paid holiday. there were only eight african-american legislators, black legislators in the legislature and this bill passed. and it was signed into law. and it went into effect june 13 1979. it was mainly here in the south where the celebration was -- you had major celebrations. today you have big celebrations in milwaukee. you have los angeles

that is the story that we are currently here telling at the texas state history museum. # . >>> we are in the private suite of linden and lady bird johnson. this was private quarters for the president and first lady. when i say private i mean that. this is not part of a tour that is offered to the public. this had never been opened to the public. you are seeing it because of c-span's special access. vips come into this space as they did in lyndon johnson's day. it's not open to our visitors on a daily basis. and the remarkable thing about this space is it is really a living, breathing artifact. it hasn't changed at all since president johnson died in january of 1973. there is a document in the corner of this room signed by among others the then archivist of the united states telling my predecessors myself and successors that nothing in this room can change. this is just as president johnson would have seen it in his day. there have been a number of luminaires in this room, seven presidents have strided through these rooms, six first ladies the queen of england prince philip prince char

so, the texas state board of education affects what the students learn across the country. the texas circular standards are known as teks for texas education knowledge and skills. they are a revision of the 1998 teks which themselves often referred to religion that most of the 1998 references were general in nature whereas many of those in the current have very specific agendas behind them. the most obvious example of this is their portrayal of the bible as the wellspring of american political thought. this is a signature belief of an ideology that i call christian americanism an ideology that believes america's founders intended it to be a christian nation that america has trusted from its heritage and that it is a patriotic and religious duty to return the country to its true christian identity and here i refer you back to the paper this morning on the founders. when the 15 member board created the current teks in 2009 and 2010, seven of the ten republican members including the board chair worked very hard to work out this ideology into the social studies standards and are

auntie spec, former texas state seven enter -- state senator wendy davis, who was back in the news in 2013 after a 17 hour filibuster on a debate on abortion clinics in texas. ms. davis: perhaps given the sexualized nature in which women candidates and women's issues are framed, woefully, might be a more apt way to describe the tactics. some of that occurs in failing frightening ways -- fairly frightening ways. for example, my opponents derided me, using photoshop images inviting a response from potential voters to review be as highly sexualized, rather than intelligent and competent of a potential state it appeared there were also questions raised about my mother qualities, that i abandoned my children when i went to law school. so attention was diverted for my achievements. i was no longer to be applauded for graduating law school with honors, while also juggling the responsibilities of caring for my young family. i was to be reviled for self-improvement at the expense of giving my full time to childbearing. >> wendy davis on women in politics tomorrow night at 8:00 eastern here on
