history museum is texas' official state history museum. we were opened in 2001. we are charged with telling the story of texas. we have three floors of exhibition space where we artifacts0 original that tell the story of texas. we also had temporary exhibitions, including fly girls, which is what we are standing in right now, and two theaters that show films regularly. >> this is texas, cradle of our army push air force. buses and out of those buses step girls. women's air force service pilots. exhibition isls very special to us. it is an exhibition that we and toon veterans day tell the story of these world war ii female pilots. we thought it was an important texas story, but also in important story that connect texas with the nation. when world war ii broke out in 1938-1939, one of the women pilots of america, her name was jacqueline cochran, she was a business owner, entrepreneur, and fearless pilot. she approached president franklin roosevelt and her slaty eleanor roosevelt with the idea --using women to fly women's using women to fly.

without texas there is no way they can get a majority in the electoral college. people look at states like virginia and see it change, its dynamics becoming purple or even shading blue when it had been read and republican before, and ask whether or not that will happen in texas. i do not think it is for a long time. there's a lot of projections out there by a number of people that texas is not going to become much more competitive because of the increase in a number of hispanics in our population. the demographic projections are that we will become majority hispanic sometime in the next 10 to 15 years. then the projection these people are making is, that will lead to a democratic texas. i think they are off base for a number of reasons. republicans do very well in this state among hispanic voters. we have been averaging at the statewide level about 40% of the hispanic vote. in the last election, greg abbott, candidate for governor got 44% running against wendy davis. the senator, john cornyn, got the majority of the hispanic vote. the trends are not as overwhelming as people project.

texas. he became involved in the efforts here to gain independence, and the push for annexation and joining the united states. that issue had gone back and forth between prior president of texas and u.s. presidents. both sides at one point or another refusing. there were issues going on, annexing a state that accepted slavery was an issue. great britain getting involved. sparing the united states to an -- spurring the united states to annex texas. in 1884 it became a major issue any gets revisited. so, andrew jackson writes to his friend sam houston basically saying that it would really benefit the future prosperity of texas and the united states for this to happen. he ends the letter saying, "god bless you. is the prayer of your friend, andrew jackson." the 1900 storm for galveston is a major event in the island's history. there's been a lot written about it and said about it, but it lingers today. so, it is still very much a part of galvestonians history and lives today. this letter is a recent acquisition, and it's from francis lister, who was a railroad agent. it is written to his two sons. "dear boys."
