fear of violence from armed protesters prompted texas to shut down the state capitol building in austingrounds will remain completely closed through wednesday, the day of president-elect joe biden's inauguration. the texas department of public safety is aware of armed protests planned at the texas state capitol and violent extremists who may seek to exploit constitutionally protected events. as a result, dps has deployed additional personnel and resources to the capitol and are working closely with the federal bureau of investigation to monitor events and enforce the rule of law. austin's mayor, steve adler, joins us now. thank you so much for being here. texas home to several malitia groups and multiple people with different political iodeologies. what is your biggest concern? >> it's violence and a large crowd that gets out of control. but this is what you plan for or prepare for, get ready for, and i believe we're ready. a lot of coordination between the police department here in austin and the department of public safety with the state, and i'm hopeful that this is just one of many

protective measures, things that are putting in place ahead of what might happen here at the texas state capitol. they have preemptively closed the capitol grounds behind me, all the way through to the inauguration at this point. basically they're doing that out of an abundance of caution is what they're telling me, just in case things happen here at the capitol in terms of protests from different groups here in the state of texas. now, in terms of what they're tracking, they're tracking three potential events this weekend, one on saturday, today, the other two tomorrow. so far we've seen one small group here outside the capital. they showed up, led by a man who is apparently going to run for governor. they were here for about 45 minutes and then they left. things are very calm here at the capitol but that doesn't mean that dps, the department of public safety isn't prepared. they've shut the grounds here, see the padlock here and then if you can look into the grounds there you can see there is a large contingent of officers, there are dozens of officers that we're able to see on the ground, som

texas has abruptly closed the state capitol in austin after reports this week of pro-trump groups andxtremists planning marches this weekend on capitol buildings across the country. now, we're told that unverified internet chatter seems to have calmed down, but the lone star state is not alone in taking no chances. casey stegall live in austin with details. casey. >> reporter: arthel, as you know, the fbi issued a bulletin saying that armed protests were expected not just here in austin, but in all 50 states at the respective capitol buildings. and we're not just talking about this weekend as well, but into next week leading up to the inauguration. texas department of public safety saying that it is an all hands on deck situation, adding that they have ample troopers and other officers working and able to respond to any threats. in pennsylvania orange barriers have gone up around many key entry points to the capitol grounds there in harrisburg. while in salem, oregon, members of the national guard have been called up to provide an extra layer of security should it be necessary and sho

not unusual in the state of texas where it's legal to carry. not the grounds of the capitol but here on the street where we are. you can see on the street behind me, a couple of protesters but really, it's been quite calm all day long but not to say they're not taking this seriously. in a normal time, you could walk into the capitol grounds here. this is the capitol building behind me. normally, this is open to the public. but right now, it's not. it's going to be closed. i can show you the security precautions the department of homeland security is taking. the building and grounds will be closed at least through wednesday according to security officials here. you can see there are dozens of officers inside these grounds. they've been here for several days now. although this is the first day this has been closed up. you can see there's a padlock chain here on the fence, not allowing people inside at the moment. and dps said they're doing this out of an abundance of caution. they're trafficking several different events. one for today and two more they say they're tracking for
