town. cotton farming was really important in this area in the 19th century. a lot of immigrants, especially italians, who came to texas ended up -- you know, they did not have a lot of funds, so they ended up buying a lot of land along the river, the river bottoms, but it turns out that that land was really great for cotton farming and pecan farming , and we still have a lot of cotton farming around this area today. the temperature and the way the land is along the brazos river was really very good for that sort of thing. we did have -- because we had cotton farming, so there was also slavery in texas in the area, this particular bale is a really early bale. it shows how they put them together. over here, this is actually a hook scale and a hoisting beam so that they could weigh the cotton. this is just a simple cotton gin and lent separator. this was used in the 19th century as well. of course, this is a different kind of bale. they tried this, doing a round bale, but it did not catch on, probably because it did not hold together quite as well as some of the other ways of bailing the cotton. although we only have a c

towns along all of route 66, glenn rio. so, we are going to cross the freeway here now and get onto a little strand of old route 66, the last strand in texas going west and the first strand if you are going east. with that in mind, we are actually going to stop at the first last motel, which is right on the state line. and just like the name implies, it was the first or last thing you saw depending on which way you were going. we are standing inside the longhorn cafe, which was built around 1951 in glenn rio. this is where everybody had their first or last meal in texas. it was an exceptionally busy, successful cafe because it was conveniently located in the middle of nowhere. people could fill up their bellies, fill up their tanks in their cars, and if they were tired, they would get a room at the motel in the back. but either way, glenn rio was a happening town back in the 1950's. this was definitely in the book. we had a lot of fun photographing this, and i had a lot of fun writing about it as well. glenn rio was truly a busy place along route 66. it is hard to imagine that cars would truly be stacked up five deep at the gas pumps in th
