this is likely going to speed that up. >> ifill: professor portier when thad allen, admiral allen saidtoday that this is like a massive collection of smaller spills instead of a single big spill, does that change what you do to help clean it up? >> it does because normally we have operated from a position of having a few night amount of oil so-- finite amount of oil so we know what we are dealing with. here we have repeated oiling events. so the ability to clean an area particularly on our coastal marshs in south louisiana, knowing that additional oiling will probably occur as we go through the summer, late fall and even early winter months, the strategy has to be very flexible in order to take advantage of the climate, take advantage of areas that are not oil, protect them once we clean them. and then have a very aggressive strategy of going after oil, areas that are repeatedly oiled. >> ifill: repeatedly oiled, so when admiral allen says things like, i think the words were "adapting to an enemy that's changing", that is what we are talking about, you can clean it today and it will be

[unintelligible] i will let thad allen address this because we talked about this during oor meeting. >> we have a number of different types of skimming equipment. we have others that are towed and employ closer to shore. they have become the major resource to fight this. we know what we are doing near the well head. we have to do maximum skimming near the shore. we have over 400 skimming vessels. our goal is to take the smaller equipment that is flexible and put it on vessels of opportunity and coordinate better with their local and state partners. >> you will only get two questions. this is an issue that has come up across the gulf. keep in mind about vessels of opportunity could range from a large boat to a little recreation but. oat. each of them will have different take skimming equipment of the sort that admiral allen discussed and place it on the boat. maybe they can act as sentinels to spot oil or maybe some of them are shuttling supplies back and forth to these ships. we are taking an inventory now of all the vessels that have presented themselves to determine which ones can

we are joined this morning with thad allen, our national incident commander dealing with the oil spill in the gulf of mexico. he is also here for a meeting with cabinet agencies that are dealing with this crisis as well, that begins in a little less than an hour. let me turn it over to him to walk through the stages of our response. we will both take your questions. >> thanks, robert. good morning. first, a quick operational update. in the last 24 hours, the protection of the discover enterprise over the well head produced 11,000 barrels of oil. they continue to increase over -- over the last three days of operation we have gone from 6000 11,000, trying to close the venting valves and moved to a greater capacity. bp anticipates moving and other craft in the can handle production and the combination of the two combined will have a production capability of 20,000 barrels a day. we're looking to increase production, as i said, so we can slowly close the events and see how the containment cap working and whether or not any oil is forced down by the pressure through the rubber seals. britis

. >> lehrer: national incident commander thad allen briefed reporters this morning. >> the goal is later on today to finish that cut and to be able to put a containment device over the top of the welled head and contain the oil, bring it to the surface, and flare off the gas and produce product moving forward. >> lehrer: hours later there was word that the remote-controlled sub had freed the saw, but still a giant cloud of raw crude kept spewing from the well and it will likely get worse before it gets better. >> we don't anticipate the flow of oil to increase until the second cut is done. our florate technical group estimated the potential for a 20% increase once that cut is made. it has not been made yet. in the meantime , the it is being treated with subsea dispersants. >> lehrer: it's been more than six weeks since "deepwater horizon" exploded and slank. by official estimates, more than 40 million gallons of oil may have spilled already. 127 miles of louisiana coast is now fouled, and the sea-born sludge is now making its way father east. oil was reported tuesday on petit bois island

coast guard admiral thad allen addressed that issue in washington. >> we're redoubling our efforts to continually question those assumptions and get more aberacy especially as we know the flow rate and we're able to assess production. but i can guarantee you unequivocally nobody is low-balling anything that works for me and i will never low-ball anything. we will give you the honest data we've got and the basis for the assumptions and where that led us. >> lehrer: a government task force was expected to present a new estimate this week or next. government scientists confirmed yesterday there are plumes of low concentrations of oil far below the gulf surface, but this morning, b.p.'s doug suttles again played down that finding. >> no one's yet found any concentrations that measure below-- are higher parts per million, so i think it may be depending on how you're defining this. but i can tellue and i have looked at this data-- we have not found any significant connitration of oil below the surface. that's what everyone's data has shown so far. >> lehrer: in the meantime, the associated
