we're finally going to get to the first thanksgiving, the first thanksgiving. no, the feast comes about by kind of an accident. right? that's exactly right. so the the english have brought in their first harvest up to that point, they are teetering on edge of starvation. and it looks like plymouth could very well join a very long list of failed colonies, the 16th and early 17th century is littered with colonial attempts. jamestown was like the lord of the flies. in the case of jamestown, they actually had pulled up anchor and were sailing away just as their new governor is coming up the chesapeake bay forces them to turn around. it could have gone the way of roanoke. right. and plymouth almost goes the way of run up. but they you know, they managed to bring in their first harvest, including indian corn. right. which native people have taught them how to grow. so it looks like they're going to survive for longer than they had anticipated. and they decide it's time to take a break. pause. let our hair down a little bit right. did they dance? oh, that's a good que

of canceling thanksgiving ?> left and right. here is what i'm saying. you could celebrate thanksgiving without invoking a false and i think damaging history. we can get together with family and friends, offer thanks what's good in our lives without referencing pilgrims, indians and sugarcoated colonial history. indeed. white americans celebrated thanksgiving around the 1600s, 1700s and early 1800s without ever invoking this false history. it is a fairly recent invention. and so what i say is let's relegate that myth to the dustbin of late 19th and 20th century cultural history and retain the holiday and all this good. >> because the wampanoag to this day have a date morning on thanksgiving. >> t?some do. one of my wampanoag colleagues says ask 10 wampanoag is what they think about thanksgiving you'll get different answers. some of them have a traditional thanksgiving like any other american. others a traditional thanksgiving and go to this day of mourning protest that they hold in plymouth every thanksgiving day

what about thanksgiving? were lessons learned after so many family gatherings and people traveling and, you know, did it invite some problems? you know, a lot of illnesses in your school district, and that's why you were trying to get ahead of the game for the christmas break? >> that's right, fredricka. in fact, after thanksgiving, we start an uptick in both absences and covid cases related -- right after the thanksgiving holiday. it lasted for up to two weeks after the thanksgiving holiday. since the winter break is certainly longer than the thanksgiving holiday, it makes sense for us to take these measures. you know, in the school district it's about protecting public health, making sure our students and staff are in school regularly. and it's really important in philadelphia because we are working really hard to get dropout rates down, graduation rates up, and if we're going to be the fastest improving large urban school district, one of the things that's important is our kids have to be in school. so we
