the u.s. is taking steps to protect americans in iraq. abc'ss from baghdad. >> reporter: with jihadi forces on the move north of baghdad, the state is ordering the temporary evacuation of a significant number of embassy employees here and a significant increase in security personnel, including a platoon of marines trained in anti-terrorism. after a humiliating week of defeat, the iraqi forces are striking back. from the air, targeting at what the iraqis call nests of terrorism. the helicopters launching powerful rockets at targets near the main road leading to baghdad where the jihadi fighters have left a trail of dead and wounded across a swath of iraq, reaching 200 miles in a matter of days. now the jihadi fighters just 60 miles outside of baghdad where a series of explosions rocked this city killing at least 15. >> a lot of fear here. >> a lot of fear. >> reporter: security forces here are mobilizing. political and religious leaders calling for new recruits, who are lining up in huge numbers to join the fight. >> are you ready to take up arm

and now word of a hero on the scene. abc's steve osunsami is there. [ gun fire ] >> reporter: that's the sound of gunfire, just before lunch at the forsyth county courthouse north of atlanta. an eyewitness across the street recording it on a cell phone. >> i heard pap, pap, pap, maybe three to four. >> reporter: police say the gunman was an anti-government "sovereign citizen" who had a court hearing today on drug and weapons charges. they say that dennis marx was trying to drive this silver suv into the front of the courthouse, and shot a deputy working outside. deputy daniel rush fired back and saved the day. >> he was very close to being a major catastrophe. and the deputy that was shot averted what would have been a whole lot more deaths. >> reporter: witnesses say other officers instantly swarmed the scene, shooting and killing the gunman. >> the car jumped the curb and landed right by the courthouse steps and then the police pulled up, they shot win domes out of the car and the guy fell out on the ground. >> reporter: pol

tonight police are still on the scene. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian joins us live with an update. >> reporter: we are here in contra costa county on pacheco boulevard, an active scene behind me. take a look, the focus is on that pickup truck. it's at the center of this investigation. it was driven by the suspect. sources tell me a high-speed chase is what started this whole thing around 9:30 tonight. chp officers chased the suspect along highway 4 in pittsburg. the suspect had a young man under 18 in the truck with him. at one point the suspect suddenly stopped, let the boy out of the truck, then took off again. the chase continued onto this boulevard where the suspect rammed into chp officers and police officer cars and the chp fired at the suspect. the suspect has been taken to john muir hospital and is believed to be okay. back live now, the boy is being questioned by the sheriff's department at this hour. he too is expected to be in fine condition. >>> tonight's other headlines, the woman and baby killed and five

relentlessly pushing toward the capital. abc'smacdonald is there. >> reporter: extremist fighters are now edging closer to the capital. there is resistance against them in pockets and small victories and iraq's military is trying to fight back. they're still battling for control of the country's biggest oil refinery and vowing to defend baghdad at all costs. iraqi soldiers are fighting to uphold the shia dominated government under attack from sunni militants and this division is tearing the nation apart as this commander tells me, there is now just one solution. >> just one language now this language. >> reporter: every vehicle has been bought, every soldier has been trained, and every weapon has been supplied using u.s. taxpayers' dollars. we'll only know if that money is well spent if these guys can prove they're ready to stand up to the threat from isis. into the mix, 90 u.s. military advisers arrived in baghdad, still u.s. secretary of state john kerry telling abc's alex marquardt, america will no longer fight iraq's war. >> y

the hugs they received as they landed. abc's muhammad lila in pakistan with more on the images going global. >> reporter: they're the photos creating shockwaves. the taliban celebrating. here, the man in the middle, the taliban's deputy minister of intelligence, newly freed, smiling and later drinking tea. another taliban leader shaking hands with supporters. and this -- the taliban's former army chief embracing in a hug. the man no longer behind bars, although they won't be allowed to leave qatar for at least a year. their release even drew an incredibly rare letter from taliban leader mullah omar, a man who hasn't been seen or heard from in nearly a decade. saying, "i extend my heartfelt congratulations to the entire afghan muslim nation for this big victory." the question now is, will these men go back to the battlefields? since 2009, at least 82 detainees have been released from guantanamo bay. and statistics show that only five of them have returned to violence. of course, that may not do much to silence the backlash in the
