the afl-cio did not like the program, they thought it kept wages too low. ernesto is an important person to know about. how many of you have heard about cesar chavez? most of you. to? about ernes i think it is really important we think about ernesto. he was a mexican-american labor activist and he became prominent because he is interested in organizing farmworkers rights to unionize and he is also opposed to the "bracero" program. he becomes a leading intellectual and labor activist. he writes an book called labor," and he criticizes this program because he argued that the agricultural industry is intentionally getting vulnerable workers. these of vulnerable workers cannot unionize because they are not protected by union laws. they cannot even quit. if they try to campaign for themselves, they could easily not be hired back or be sent home. one of the reasons i think he is informative is because he does not criticize the individual "bracero." he recognizes why these mexicans -- he himself is mexican-american. he came to america in the early 20th century. he

yeah, well, so nixon -- i mean, sorry, humphrey got support from, first of all, the afl-cio and the unionseally started to organize on his behalf in the general election. that did give him a bump. but then when he declared essentially that he was his own man on the vietnam war, that he was going to support a total stoppage of the bombing of vietnam and essentially breaking from lyndon johnson, that did help him. i mean, you know, i think most historians would agree, and the polls suggested he began to close the gap. and so as we discussed earlier, the popular vote, the electoral college vote, was a blowout. nixon won it big. 301 votes, i think. but the popular vote was i think less than 1%. 43.5% for nixon. 42 and change for humphrey. now one of the reasons he was able to close that gap was due to the -- due to that speech. and the sense that he could bring back in, say, the eugene mccarthy supporters, the anti-war supporters. now, robert kennedy just, you know, very fascinating -- so, you know, to the caller's point, we'll never know, of course. in some ways, it might have been harder for
