the airbus is very well made. the a-320 is out of airbus. so a couple things they are going to be interested in right now. in the immediate term. they want though know who was on board. we have the passenger manifesto right out in. and is there anything that had a connection to terrorism. what isn't at cargo? where did it originate. who packed it? that will be critical. 6700 hours for the pilot. 2700 hours for the co-pilot. and then we will look at more information to the plane itself. when was the last time it was serviced. any concerns with the plane when it was serviced? did anything notice anything? a crack in the fuse lge? they will clearly want to know that. the conditions of the engines? any issues with the engines at that point? and anybody who serviced the plane, whether in paris or eps in egypt itself. more about the crew, do we know about who they were? what their backgrounds are? that will be very much front and center. at this hour, it is very early on. it is a part of the world where terrorism is a daily reality, i think that ha

we know that just before it disappeared, the airbus made dramatic turns and lost altitude. elaine cobb is at charles de gaulle airport outside of paris with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. so far there's no sign of debris or wreckage from the jet and no explanation as to what happened. nothing is being ruled out, but egyptian official say it's more likely the plane was brought down by an act of terrorism than a mechanical issue. greek aization officials were unable to contact the plane whether it entered egyptian airspace. it was flying at 37,000 feet when something happened. greek radar shows the plane made two sharp turns, violent maneuvers. it first turned 90 degrees to the left, then swung 360 degrees to the right. while making the severe turns, it was dropping like a rock. down to 10,000 feet before disappearing from radar. there were 66 people on board the a-320 traveling from paris to cairo, including an experienced crew and three security guards. there were no distress calls. the air and sea search involving several countries is concentrated abou

, there have been very few incidents or accidents involving the airbus a-320. the few that we are aware of usually involve some sort of pilot error. but a mechanical error is just highly, highly unlikely given the track record of this plane. and this was actually as you may recall the airbus a-320 was the miracle on the hudson plane which held up remarkably well when two flocks of geese were ingested into the engines and captain sullenberger had to land it on the river and it did not come apart as he landed it on the hudson river. it was water tight, all the people survived. that incident alone, of course it wasn't traveling at 519 miles per hour but it speaks to the integrity and how well built it is. >> pilot error, when the plane is at cruising altitude and on auto pilot, pilot error should not be a possibility. >> absolutely. unless if they were to some reason disengage, but that's highly unlikely given the redundancies involved in the airbus system. >> tom costello, thank you for standing by as we continue to cover this. we are following the latest breaking

the airbus a-320, no americans among them. in a news conference in cairo just over an hour ago, egypt's aviation minister said it's more likely the plane was brought down by a terror attack than a mechanical failure. meantime greece's defense minister said the plane fell 22,000 feet and swerved sharply before it disappeared from radar. the jetliner was about a half hour from landing in cairo when radar contact was lost. the weather reportedly good. the flight crew very experienced. families of those on board have been gathering at the airports in cairo and paris. we have all of this covered for you this morning. nbc correspondents standing by. let's go straight to london. nbc news foreign correspondent kelly cobiella with the latest. having such a strong statement from an official saying this is likely a terror act, certainly changes the investigation's urgency if that's the case. >> that's right, tamron, it required quite a bit of prodding on the part of reporters to get the aviation chief in egypt to go that far when he start

the airbus is a european made airplane, who takes the lead in this investigation? >> i imagine the egyptians, but they will be strongly supported by the french. >> you have a fair amount of experience in this in that you investigated -- led the investigation into the crash of egyptair flight 990 in 1999 in this country. how was it to deal with the egyptian government and the egyptian authorities? >> well, you have to remember the egyptian airline is an arm of the state. the egyptian state does not like openness or criticism, and so it's very difficult dealing with them, and to have an honest and objective investigation. what is unfortunate here is once again, the answers to what has happened are at the bomb of the sea, 3,000 feet of water, when the military has had for decades deplorable recorders these planes could be equipped with that would float on the ocean and we could be getting answered today in real-time. >> you don't think this will be another malaysia 370? they health found the black boxes from that malaysia flight yet this, one ought to be quicker and e

one is, the airbus is, remember the flight that crashed in the rockaways after taking off jfk, 9/11, the next month, october of 2001? trish: yeah. >> after that one of causes was that the pilot was deflecting the rudder too heavily and it tore the tail off. airbus airplanes have a governor you can't deflect your rudder too much. they also have a limited amount of turn space. so the fact that it did this, the plane is made not to do that. so it must have been either coming apart, and that was radar track of some of the pieces coming off the plane, or, it took off one wing which would automatically spin the plane in the air. but it wasn't that they were driving or steering the plane in a particular fashion. trish: do you think something had potentially already happened and it was -- >> yes. trish: it was spiraling out of control. >> that was radar tracking what had happened. trish: why would it nobody called in, for help? >> because it was instantaneous. they had no, they had no warning. it was, either a massive decompression, mechanically, or it was an explosion. that's why everybody

talking about the acar system on the airbus 320. where is it located here? aircraft communications addressing and reporting system, acars, all you need to know is it is live streaming important information about systems to the maintenance people. for the pilot's perspective, it is here, these are flight management input systems, the box is beneath it here in the avionics bay. this gives them the acars if they want to see it, typically you don't bother with it because it is there for maintenance. that's not their bailiwick. this is to be sure when it lands, they can turn the plane around. >> hardly look at it in normal circumstances. got five or six data points with acars. explain where each point is on the aircraft. >> the first warning we see in the report is from the back window. this back window started to get a report saying it is bad. following that, another report saying it wasn't just the anti-ice, it was the window failed, which would imply some breach. the next report we got is in the compartment, the other one behind there where the lavatory system

that said, the airbus a-320 in service since the early 1980s. to my knowledge and the research i've been able to do since last night, i cannot find a case where there has been a major fire in the avy onnicsing bay so the the history of the fleet says the airplane has never done this before. so the question to the investigators now is what could have caused these six faults to occur in a three-minute period, but then not have additional faults in the next four minutes, and then to have the airplane come down at a very high rate of speed, high vertical rate of speed. put those things, tile those dots together and you may well be able to explain what happened. but as it stands now we don't have the ability to do that. there's a lot of research that's going on now to try to understand it. >> john cox, always glad for our conversations despite the horrible circumstances. thank you so much. >>> we're going to talk with a former ntsb investigator and find out what inspectors hope to learn coming at the bottom of the hour. >>> donald trump is off the ca

the plane was an airbus a-320. egypt air says rescue teams are searching for the aircraft, and that is about all we know at this hour. i want to bring in greg feith. he's a former ntsb investigator. he's been following all of this with us for the past hour we've been on the air covering this breaking news. a lot of it is still early on in this investigation, greg. but, you know, as we're trying to kind of figure out what happened to this plane, where do you begin to piece it together? >> well, to begin with, you know, it's a matter of bedding information, and making sure have factual information. 30 minutes ago, we thought this was a 737. now egypt air is confirming it's an a-320. that's how misleading things can be and change very quickly. and until we really get more definitive information, it's hard to piece the entire sequence together. the investigative authorities now will be turning to the french. they'll be utilizing airbus resources, the french investigative -- both the b.e.a. and the d.g.a.c. to assist in

the airbus is the workhorse. it is like the equivalent of the boeing 737. there are thousands of these airplanes flying. it is one of the safest airplanes in existence comparable to the boeing 737. it is a phenomenally built airplane. it is just that there are so many of them out there flying. >> okay. so two black boxes. they are typically in the back of the airplane. they're set in titanium or stainless steel so that they survive any kind of fire or crash. what might we learn? >> it will be key when we examine those boxes. we'll see hundreds and thousands of parameters on those boxes. that, combined with the forensic analysis of explosive residue on the debris that has been found, will give up a clearer picture of exactly what happened. >> we'll hear from the pilots if they said anything. >> that's correct. there is audio recordings of everything going on in that cockpit. sounds in the background. pilots' voices. communication with air traffic control or lack of in this case. >> okay. if we're looking at terrorism or pilot error, or mechanical failure, th

the airbus does not have that. the airbus, maker of the missing plane, released a statement that saith our concerns go to all those affected. airbus will make further factual information available as soon as the details have been confirmed and cleared by the authorities for release. joining me from london is kelly, good morning to you. what's the latest in the search? >> good morning, alex. still nothing official from the egyptian civil air authority ministry. we're waiting for a press conference within the next half hour. we hope. but we have heard from french president francois hollande who was speaking to reporters in the last half hour and essentially confirmed that flight 804 has crashed. the information we have gathered, ministers, members of government and the egyptian authorities confirm sadly that the plane has crashed. he says it is lost. he was asked if terrorism could be a factor, when asked that question. he said it could be a terrorist hypothesis, but nothing should be ruled out. we should express our solidarity to the families and identify out the cause. the paris prosecutor has opened an investigati

the airbus a-320. it includes at least 56 passengers and a crew of ten. also being told at least two children and a baby on board. the egyptian aviation ministry tells us 30 egyptians, 15 french, one briton and one belgian among the passengers. we've learned the pilot has more than 6,000 hours of flying time. the egyptian state newspaper reporting that he made no distress call. it happened about ten minutes before it disappeared from radar. it was at an altitude of 37,000 feet. there are some conflicting reports over whether it disappeared over egyptian air space or just entering egyptian air space. we know it vanished before daybreak under favorable, clear weather conditions. search and rescue teams are now looking for the plane. greece is assisting with two aircraft and a frigate is heading to that region of the mediterranean. helicopters also on standby in the southern island for potential recovery operations. you heard leah saying any u.s. availability would be headed to that area if they were nearby. the paris airport authority, the french civil aviat
