the pilots' union claims such costs are what sent the airline into bankruptcy. gold is on the move from new york city to germany. germany's central bank, bundesbank, will withdraw 300 tons of gold from the new york federal reserve. germany stored the gold there during the cold war to protect it, and it has stayed there - for no extra cost - as a backup currency in case of global financial crisis. now, bundesbank has a plan to move a majority of the gold back to germany by 2020. jack ewing of the international herald tribune says some believe the move is a sign of conflict between central banks. "there are some people that do believe that this is somehow connected to mistrust between the central banks, that the fed in washington has taken a lot of risk by buying from its quantitative easing. the bundesbank is much more conservative. there is this school of thought that says they are bringing the gold back to keep it safe." ewing says the gold is worth 183 billion u.s. dollars. bargain rates continue for mortgages while car loans are looking dirt cheap. greg mcbrid

as you say, the public perception is one thing. i wonder if any airlines quietly, quietly are expressing concerns either to you or back channels to boeing about this aircraft. >> yes. they are expressing their concerns. have they picked up the phone since yesterday and picked up the phone and called jim, probably not. i suspect what we're hearing from the airlines and what they are telling boeing is the same thing they have been telling boeing over the last several years. a, are you going to deliver this aircraft on time. b, is it going to meet expectations. if that happens, again, for the most part, most of the airlines flying this aircraft are reporting that it is delivering on the expectations that they had set in advance when they ordered the aircraft. i know that's a little strange. some people will look at this and say, listen, there's all these problems with the dreamliner. generally speaking it is performing. having said that when you mention a fire on a new aircraft, a consultant in washington said to me yesterday said, listen, you mention fire on

the airline plans to cut 600 management jobs in february at its chicago headquarters. fourth-quarter earnings dropped on slower air traffic, superstorm sandy, the united- continental merger transition, and the grounding of its 787 dreamliner jets. united's ceo says 2012 was "the toughest year of our merger integration," but the airline is "back on track." consumers are bracing for higher beef prices. the effects of last summer's drought may cause the price of beef to increase by 10 to 20 cents per pound. many farmers thinned out cattle herds as scorched corn crops triggered higher feed costs. in san antonio, texas, cargill is letting go of 2,000 workers as it closes a beef packaging plant. burger king is dropping an overseas beef supplier after traces of horsemeat were found in its products. abp food group supplies beef to b-k restaurants in the u.k. and ireland. b-k says there are no risks to human health, but some of bk's products may be temporarily unavailable. meanwhile, mcdonald's is emphasizing 'knowing your fillet o fish.' the golden arches is auditing its supply

that is 10 batteries from one of the airlines the second airline using the japanese airline, using the dreamliner also had problems. they were not required to turn these events over to the regulator in japan or in the u.s. we have pages of regulations. this was seen as kind of a minor or normal maintenance issue. the real question is, both airliners reported their problems to boeing. they said we had to change out, in one case 10 batteries. in another case we don't know how many. the question is, whether boeing was connecting the dots. whether they saw that there was a problem brewing with these batteries and what they did about it. melissa: how could they not? how could they not at this point? that sounds like an awful lot of batteries. it sound like the same problem over and over again. we're also hearing there was a study back in 2010. the faa found this lithium ion chemtries boeing was using, lithium cobalt was more flammable than several possible types. >> that's right. melissa: there was a study out that said this could be a problem. and all of sudden you see evidence of it, don'
