i would like to take the americans conservative union for this. ch of us has our unique story as to how we became conservative. i'm honored to share mine with you. i did grow up in the political home. i actually became a conservative when i was a college student at the university of illinois. i recognize that college is not the place where most people become conservatives. i was studying political science in american history. i had opportunity to study our nations foundational documents for myself. the constitution. the declaration of independence. the federalist papers. i began to compare our country and our freedom with countries where the government has more centralized power. it quickly became apparent to me that those countries were left prosperous. civil liberties are not protected. countries like us, the country is more prosperous economically. civil liberties are respected. i began to marvel at the genius of our constitution. i wasn't seeking to find a political philosophy. all of a sudden i realized i had one. i was a conservative. a const

americans on the left hate it. americans on the right hate it. unions, business groups, environmentalists, conservatives, the aclu, all of them have expressed concern. it is pretty rare to see a coalition that broad to agree on anything in this town and yet it's easy to see why americans would be so united in opposition to this regulation. the first amendment skpeufts exists to protect political speech. that was what the founders had in mind when they wrote the first amendment, political speech. and the g -- government should be doing everything it can to protect that right, not hurt it. that's why you saw a record number of americans register their complaints with the i.r.s. in fact, there were more than 140,000 comments, 140,000 comments on this regulation, which i hear is the highest number ever received in the agency's entire history. and let's not forget the i.r.s. has a long way to go to regain public trust these days. too many americans look at the agency and see an instrument of political harassment rather than a bureau of tax processors. so if the agency wants to regain trust and return to its

the folks who put on c-pac. we have some dialogue with them and asked to attend as guests of american conservative union this yearre. >> something has been made of the fact you don't have a booth or table at cpac. can you set the record straight here? were you not allowed to have a booth? >> we didn't ask for a booth. we asked for opportunity to co-sponsor. we asked to be a guest while we worked on reestablishing our relationship. we asked to attend as their guest and have a smaller presence. in our conversation we talked about ways we can increase that presence next year. >> how important is it, ross? how important is it for the republican party to open up the tent and be more inclusive? >> it's very important. anybody who saw the results of the 2012 elections knows we need to be reaching out to millennials, all kinds of different people and difference sects of society, and that includes gay people. i think the republican party is changing. you've seen that recently with our return to cpac, the governor reviewing 1062, all those things point to a change. >> there's an interesting poll out today that gay marriage
