the rocking r bar, starkey's, the american legion all destroyed. city assistant manager chuck wynn described it as the worst catastrophe he had ever seen in the city. firefighters from bozeman, from big sky, three forks, nearby communities all came to the rescue to put out the blaze. these brave men and women stopped the fire from spreading to nearby stores. the montana national guard was called upon to help provide security. one year after this tragedy, we pause to recognize today as a day of mourning and remembrance. we join the men and women of bozeman who observe a moment of silence this morning. today montanans will mourn the loss of tara bowman. our thoughts and prayers go out for her friends and her family and all who knew her. i never met tara, but i understand that she was a very special woman. she was a talented artist and a mentor to other artists in bozeman. tara liked to paint in the quiet morning. she had come into work early at the montana trails art gallery the morning of the blast. her family and many friends around bozeman miss her

because of those ills dao returned continually and amid the post-war wreckage with the help of his legions of american and friends he created an organization called village health which is a clinic for people who can't health. village health works is affiliated with partners in health a much larger organization founded by village health works has to raise its own money. building and staffing a clinic in a desperately poor country isn't easy. the clinic was a pile of rocks when i visited the site with dao in the summer of 2006. by the fall of 2008, it was providing food to the hungriest people in the area, clean water to all of them and it was also a medical center, which in its first year and a half of operation treated 28,000 different patients. most of them for free. there was -- there still is nothing like this operation elsewhere in burundi. people come there for help from all over the country. some people come on week long techs from other countries, too, from the congo and some visitors have come not for medical help but only to look at the clinic. when dao asked one of these travelers why he ha

i went with president bush to the american legion convention on tuesday, the last week of august 2007. it was sort of an emotional thing for me because it would be the last thing-- time i was on air force one in the last time i was a senior aide to the president on a trip and i was going home because they spent part of my childhood in nevada. i knew the president would give a speech to the american legion and the new afterwords we would have to meet with over a dozen families who had lost someone in afghanistan or iraq. president bush did this almost every week from november 2001 on. and this is as it was the first time you been to northern nevada with time to spare said since he had become president since the balloon went up in afghanistan. after his speech he went back behind the curtain and met with each family individually, and when we walked into the room and met the kristof's i stood over in the corner to take notes. christine kristof began to speak. she is one of the most remarkable people i have ever met. she was calm and cool and focused and very, very fluent and really remar
