i think that it's important that the american people understand what's at stake in this debate and what's at stake for them. and i think tonight he's going to talk in very specific tirms about what they can expect from health care reform. i think oftentimes here in washington the debate descends into a bunch of gobbledygook in terms of the american people's understanding, and it becomes a big kind of political battle. there are some very fundamental things at stake for people who are struggling today with higher premiums, out-of-pocket costs and all the burdens that insurance industry has placed on them. >> let's get into specifics. the president is going to be specific with the american people tonight. will he tell the american people he wants to increase taxes for those making more than $$300,00 or so a year? >> i think he'll make it clear that we need new revenues, but most of this plan, and it's

the american people that the recovery, the stimulus are working, just be patient? >> well, our message is, we did not get into this problem overnight, as the american people understand it is not likely we're going to get out of this economic problem overnight. we have said repeatedly. i have said this week and last, we think unemployment will continue to grow. we do see some less negative trends in the way unemployment is going understanding we have still got quite some ways to go. >> when is it going -- when is it no longer overnight? >> when is what the lumber overnight? but you said we did not get into this problem overnight. -- >> you said we did not get into this problem overnight. >> i think this is going to take some time. i think this is going to take months and months. we have said this from the beginning. remember, the last month in which we created -- we net created jobs in this economy with december 2007. we understand that we are in the deepest recession since world war ii and the worst financial crisis when you take into account markets and housing since the great depression. that is going to take some time. but i think that there is credible evidence,

the american people understand that. the president understands that. that is why we have taken important steps to get the economy moving again. is it going to take some time? absolutely. it is the president impatient for results? you are him say that last week. -- you heard him say that last week. . . . >> does that factor in if you are worried about this? >> we are going to continue to watch the situation in california and other states that are dealing with dramatic downturns in their own fiscal situations. as i said yesterday, about $144 billion in health care and education money are going directly to the states that will help deal with some of the downturn. but obviously each of the states, like is happening at kitchen tables across the country and in washington, we're all going to have to make very tough choices. >> so your under this assumption? not just to slow down the recovery but -- >> we will decide what is in the best interests of our overall economic health and do what is necessary to ensure that we continue on our path to recovery. >> robe

well, on that note, in addition to the personal tragedy in these soldiers' lives, what should people understand about the violence that is taking place this week as american troops begin their pullback? guest: clearly there's been a big uptick in violence. there have been about 250 people, mostly iraqi civilians, killed this month. but it does appear there are focusing on american soldiers again. now, one of the things i worry about a little bit as u.s. soldiers and marines full out of bases in the cities in iraq is that it is more difficult for them to get to their bases. they're further away. and those soldiers who remain, the trainers and advisors, have that force protection further away. but they have gotten out about 100 bases. they are pulling back. i think people misunderstand. they think somehow everything is closed there. the bases like camp victory, which is the major military base in baghdad, is still open. there's still a base in mosul open. er in scattered throughout the country. they have not reduced any troops in the last month or so. we're still about 130,000, a little more than 130,000. i think it will only go down to about 12r5,000 by th

but what the american people understand is that the status quo is unsustainable. that their premiums are doubling. their out of pocket expenses have skyrocketed. we've got 46 million people without health insurance. it is bankrupting families, it's bankrupting businesses and ultimately could bankrupt the federal government. so they know that. they want change. now when you start getting into details, it's pretty easy to get people wondering gosh, you know, is the devil -- i know better than the devil i don't. and that's why it is so important for me to be consistently clear about the fact that under every proposal that i've discussed, people would not have to give up their health-care plan if they are happy with it. they don't have to change doctor approximates if they're happy with it. we want to give them more choices. make sure that they have the kind of insurance reforms in place so that we don't have to see people excluded because of a preexisting condition from care, if they lose their job, if they change jobs. so the congressional process, people are always

with the administration, i think, and the congress has to do a better job in helping the american people understand some of these most complex issues, health care being number one. >> larry: are you annoyed at the far right's criticism of you? >> well, you know, nobody likes criticism. but the criticism i get from the very far right is just a cost of being in public life. what i have been saying to my republican friends center left and right in the spectrum of the party is that we better do a good after-action review of what happened last fall. and what happened last fall is we lost the presidency by 10 million votes. we lost both houses of congress, and the party essentially lost almost every demographic that you can list. rich, poor, white, black, hispanic. we are becoming a nation that is increasingly minority, and in 30 to 40 years the minorities will be the majority. we have a number of states that already have a minority majority. and so this country is changing. it's getting younger, it's internet driven and the party cannot just keep focusing on its solid, very far right-wing base. not thro

but we have a lot of things going on ear that the american people need to understand -- going on here that the american people need to understand that are going to be disastrous for them, for their health care, for their economy, that's going to hurt people, that's going to hurt people because the economy is going to fall just like we're concerned about falls and other things in our home and home safety. our grandchildren are going to live at a lower standard than we live today if we keep passing these bills. we've got unprecedented debt. we've got unprecedented deficits. right now the most abused credit card in this country today is this card, the voting card that members of congress use. this is a credit card that the chinese are picking up the debt that we're creating with the use of this card. madam speaker, we have to stop this egregious, outrageous spending that this congress is doing. it's going to kill the american economy, it's going to destroy the health care system that's being proposed in this health care bill that's being presented today. we've got to stop it, madam speak

vote to return to a written constitution and laws written by the elected representatives of the people? to help the american people understandhich of these paths he would take us down, we need to know more about your record. we need to know more about the legal reasoning behind some of your decisions on the second circuit. we need to know more about some of your public statements related to your judicial philosophy. to borrow a football analogy, the lower court judges like the quarterback. a few of your opinions do raise questions that i intend to ask you about. they do suggest, i think, the kinds of plays that he would call if you were promoted to the coaching staff. americans need to know whether you would limit the scope of the second amendment and whether we can account -- we could count on you to of hold the fundamental liberties enshrined in the bill of rights. we need to know whether you would have to limit the scope of the fifth amendment and whether you would expand the definition of public use by which government can take private property from one person and give it to another. we need to know whether you will upho

the american people need to know that. and i think they're rapidly understanding that. i look at it this way. last fall, the american people voted overwhelmingly for barack obama to make some changes. they also voted overwhelmingly for democrats to run the house and the senate. and so they have asked us to take a leadership position. and so we need to lead in this, and not be afraid to lead, and to push the envelope on health care reform. >> what do you think the president should do to get conservative democrats who are wavering right now? >> well, i think he needs to talk to them. and i think we needs to show everyone that this is what the american people want. we have to have a public option. we have one in our bill, ed, that we got out of the health committee in the senate. it's a good public option, and it's strong. and we've got to hold on to it. >> well, you know, it was the democratic party platform to bring health care to every american, was it not? or did i read that wrong? >> you've got to right, ed. >> okay. so the president has got his political capital and his enemies right now. m

he or she must have a keen understanding of the law and the ability to explain it in ways that both the lincoln's and the american people will understand and respect even if they disagree with the outcome. i look for nominee to have a sense of values which form the core of our economic system. no one including the president has the right to require ideological purity from a member of the supreme court. but we do have a right to require that the nominee accept both the principles of the constitution and its core values in society. third, we want a nominee with a sense of compassion. this is a quality i consider with the last six supreme court justices. compassion does not mean bias or lack of impartiality. it is a-that the laws more than an intellectual game in more than a mental exercise. as justice black said, "the course stand against any winds that blow as havens of refuge for those that might otherwise suffer because they are helpless, week out numbered or because they are nonconforming victims of prejudice and public excitement. a supreme court justice must be able to recognize that real people with real problems a

about deficit and debt, because part of what has been happening in this debate is the american people are understandably queasy about the huge deficits and debt we are facing right now. and, the feeling is, alright, we have the bank bailout. we have the recovery package. we have the supplemental. we have got the budget. we ours the numbers, trillionth here in trillionth there's a legitimately people are saying look, we are in recession. i am having to give up things and yet all they see as government spending more and more money. that argument i think it's been used effectively by people who don't want to change health care, to suggest that somehow this is one more government programs so i just want to address that point very quickly. first of all, let's understand that when i came in, we had a $1.3 trillion deficit, annual deficit, that we had already inherited. we had to immediately move forward with a stimulus package because the american economy had lost trillions of dollars of wealth. consumers have lost their their 401(k)'s, through their home values, you name it, they have lost trillions of dolla
