which means it is in the area right now. and they have yet to find what it is that those satellite images suggested was there. >> what could be an explanation for that? you know, the disconnect. >> yes. because remember, the satellite image as high definition as it is, is not the same as the quality of the p-8 aircraft. there are all sorts of false suggestions that a satellite photograph can bring. i still maintain that i believe that the australian military would not have announced this suspect debris if they didn't have a high degree of confidence. but that means that so far there's not that redundant confirmation of something floating there. and that's what the u.s. military is doing. they're going to be, would have the ability, i did not get the flight times. they have the ability to stay in the area for four hours. so they will continue to do their sweeps in the area to find out whether indeed they are confirming what the satellite imagery suggests. so far they cannot do that. >> i'm sorry. so if they can stay in the air

there's another that's smaller than that, and is a number of images in the general area of the biggest one. >> that's a credible sighting of a large object, but in a massive ascertain area that we are talking about. what will the search now involve? >> well, when the objects were spotted, and it's unclear at the moment when the photographs were taken. there's a date on the photographs that says march the 16th, so four days ago now. if that's the case and they had the photos and they've analysed them, that may not be right, they may have been more recent. when the photo was taken, they knew where the objects were. the trouble ishat the sea is a moving item. the water moves around. the wave moves things. what they are doing at the moment is sending the search planes, one that has been searching in the narrow area. three more will take is it in terms on a ship pattern to go to the area and search. whether the objects are still where they were when the photo was taken is hard to say, that's what will be playing out in the next few hours. this is a distance of 2,500 from the australian coas

old search area, the search area they've been looking at for the last couple of days. it covers about 123,000 square miles and lies about 1100 miles west of perth. this move stemming from ongoing analysis of the plane's last none radar contact. this is all new radar analysis. authorities say it suggests the malaysian airlines 777 was traveling faster than previously thought. if that is true, which they seem to think it is now, it means it burned more fuel, which suggests it did not fly as far south as first thought. so the surveillance aircraft are getting airborne and have a new ocean to search. this chinese plane lifting off a short time ago outside of perth, including some ultrahigh tech american p-8 poseidons. the second heading to the region from okinawa, japan. we'll have an explanation of why exactly now this radical shift 1600 miles difference in the search area, so there's a lot to cover tonight. we begin with the latest from western australia with the breaking news from paula newton that joins us now. this information could be a game changer. why are they shi

the old search area here, the green area right there, the new search area.arch area by something that happened all the way up there. >> we need to begin by going way back up to the northern part. if you look at what the statement said and you follow -- it says the new information is based on analysis of radar data between the south china sea and the straits of ma la ka. >> that is all the way up here. >> that is the area where they know the speed and position of the plane. what they are now saying is the plane -- the aircraft was traveling faster than previously estimated. what does this mean? what it means is that the plane burned more fuel here so when it started to come south, it couldn't or didn't travel as far. that's the analysis that makes sense this morning. they're now estimating it probably flew south at around 700 knots. the reason it's significant is because of what happened up by kuala lumpur, straits and therefore it didn't travel as far down. >> this is from the newish team which begs the question, richard. you know, we're three weeks into it

there's the target area. ctually they're flying more down towards here because that satellite imagery released by the australians suggested that the debris was just south of the target area. of it began that the target area was actually about 4 hours ago, much larger and then the national transportation safety board concluded you know what? we think it's actually a little bit smaller. that's the area to look at in there. that's when it turned out that the satellite imagery sort of matches up and then they started looking down in this area here. >> so the p-8 aircraft is headed back now to perth australia. there are p 3s on the way. do we have an estimated eta for them, how long they can stay out there and what kind of things that they can do. >> they're a propellerer aircraft by means they can stay aloft bean longer because their fuel burn is a little bit less. i do not have a rival i'm in the area. we're attempting to assess, i spoke in to the u.s. military and asked that question question. as i said as the p

and then the area, the planned search area, about 2300km off the coast. i want to give people an idea of how far the search area is from australian coast, and then you look at the two lines, and they talk about the routes that the plane could have taken over that - over that search area. but that is still an enormous amount of water, right? >> it is, and it's a key to using satellites. the search area is roughly the size of colorado. and it will be difficult to have an aerial survey in a short period of time. if there's clear weather, and you have overhead satellite imagery, it can be an easy thing to find. one of the things that i find interesting. two of the things is the australians have dispatched four of their p3 orion's, which is roughly 23% of the fleet. says to me there's an intention on there part to have several hours in a row of surveillance in the area, for whatever purposes - probably to track the items. earlier the prime minister, in his carefully worded statement, mentioned that these were identified somehow. it says to me a couple of thing

they'll continue to search the area. it's a very discouraging sign that the australians initially thought there was satellite imagery that could be debris from a plane, possibly flight 370, and after extensive searching by the u.s. military, no confirmation, in fact, no signs of anything. >> this is what we've seen all along over the last 13 days when we had these sightings. it was determined by tests that what they spotted was fuel, but not jet fuel. we had chinese satellite images that turned out to be nothing. we see the debris. we know the biggest piece is about 80 feet. what could have happened to it? >> it's hard to tell. as you heard, they were talking about the image resolution. that's the problem. they get the satellite imaging just like the chinese satellite. it was the image quality. now they've got a weather problem out there. it's hard to confirm right now. especially if they've been probably submerged slightly under water, to really get the fidelity of the image so that you can see if it's got markings or wi
