and so our katie nielsen drove to the bay area today. and i know you just got there in the last hour. what things are you seeing right now? >> i think one of the most impactful things that we've seen is just the nature of this fire and how it has been hopscotching from one house to another, which is so indicative of some of these wind driven fires that we are all too familiar with within the bay area. this is where five people have been confirmed, killed in the fire. these are not the mansions of the pacific palisades, and they're not the beach front bungalows of malibu. it's known as a working class neighborhood, north of the 210 freeway, best known for the rose parade. these homes were destroyed and still standing. and it is still there. we were talking with the homeowner of this home that used to be right here. they run a lawn care business. and even his grandparents would live here. now there is nothing left. i asked him, do you know when this happened? he said he drove by around 10:45 this morning and that is when he saw their homes

so we're seeing about 4% in a lot of these areas even in la and around the water coastal areas. not much relief there either. typically we see a recovery overnight. we're not going to get much in the way of recovery with that humidity leading into thursday morning. also, let's monitor the wind speeds. so i we're not in the clear just yet of those gusty winds. we've got 40 plus mile per hour winds. if i advance his time stamp forward, you'll notice overnight into the early morning hours on thursday. so about 6:07 a.m. we do get another peak wind event right here. notice the wind speeds kind of go up. and if you're wondering about that smoke, well a lot of this is blowing from the east and north. so the areas that are really going to start to feel the impacts of that smoke will be ventura county oxnard camarillo as that wind direction continues to blow the smoke in the direction. so navigate that poor air quality as well. we'll be back with a local forecast in just a few minutes. audrey. all right. vianey, thank you. closer to home, an investigation is underway after an apartment f

he's just one of many from the bay area down in the pasadena area trying to help. we know that their crews from oakland, alameda, santa clara counties, all they're trying to help out. the family of a uc berkeley football player is among those who lost their home in los angeles. calif ball says the family of freshman camden jones lost their property in the eaton fire. they were able to evacuate safely. and the devastating fires have really hurt a lot of communities in los angeles county. we're taking a live look now at some of the flames still burning right now. crews are working to get a handle on the situation, but they're still very little containment right now. a lot of neighborhoods i have been left to nothing but ash, you can see as this live shot there moves from place to place their smoke and fires popping up all over. there are still do a lot of organizations that want to help and support the people who are going through really hard times right now. and one of them is the california community foundation. their efforts aimed to rebuild and restore the people

growing in the two largest wildfires in the l.a. area. s have killed at least 24 people and destroyed more than 12,000 structures. the palisades fire is now 14% contained. the eaton fire. 33% contained. more evacuation orders have been lifted. meantime, a red flag warning is in effect down in the area through wednesday. 92,000 people remain under evacuation orders in the southern california fire zones, and 89,000 are in evacuation warning zones, which means they may need to leave at a moment's notice. curfews did go into effect just about 30 minutes ago in the area of the palisades and eaton fires. they will remain in effect until 6:00 tomorrow morning. back here in the bay area, a four year old girl is in the hospital after she was shot during a chaotic shooting in vallejo. police say it happened last night in the city's crest neighborhood. the girl is said to be in serious condition at the hospital. with that. you're watching ktvu fox two news here at 630. we continue our coverage of the fires in southern california. much of the area in

another wildfire has broken out in the calabasas and hidden hills area. this is a live picture from our sister station in los angeles. cal fire is calling this new fire the kenneth fire. so far, it has burned 50 acres and is triggering several new evacuation orders this hour. and this is just one of several buing this hour. of course,ly the palisades fire and the eaton fire have burned a combined 28,000 acres and counting.t least five aths have been confirmed in the eaton fire. while crews are actively searching for human remains in the rubble of the palisades fire, the los angeles county sheriff is requesting assistance from the california national guard and is also working on implementing a curfew in the fire zones. that curfew would be in place from 6 p.m. to six in the morning, and it could start as early as tonight. ktvu is greg lee has been following the developments in l.a. county and joins us in studio with the latest. greg. cristina. >> good evening. the damage from these fires is simply hard to fathom. entire blocks of homes have been wiped out.

this is out of calabassas. >> also the hidden hills area. this is a new fire watching the fsames there. burn near the tennis court of likely a multimillion-dollar home in a very affluent part of los angeles there. the call-up last this neighborhood, the smoke there also blowing. we are learning this fire started about 2.30, this afternoon. they're calling this the candidates fire. it burning now in some very dry brush in this candy near the canyon area. and there's also some open space there. this is north of the 101 freeway. we don't have a estimate as to how big this fire is. but they are able now the sky footage forgetting here, they are able to put helicopters up to do some assessment and also trying to drop some water and around the fire's perimeter. they're trying to save these homes by dumping water. we are still getting more information about this fire. these images are quite shocking. we also have some new information about the eaton fire and the palisades fire at all. that's happening now in southern california will take a break and
