but i was looking through and updating most of the artwork from the first edition and adding illustrations to supplement that a new species for this second edition. in the first edition, when i was thinking these full plates, i would work on the entire page of wands for i showed the solid owl building up gradually layers of paint. i would work on each of the eight to 12 images of does on a flow sheet of paper all at once. makes them great pain for the shadows and paint the shadows on all of the images at the same time and makes some reddish brown color and put that wherever we needed on all the images. that sort of assembly line process allowed me to work more quickly. it was more efficient and on a good day i could finish one more she. and about an hour per illustration is what it takes me to do a painting on the boat pared some species take longer. more detailed or more and tropez patterns. some like rose take a lot less. but this is -- in this will sound funny, but i don't actually have a lot of patience for painting. so i've developed -- sorry, wow. i have developed all of these techni

and i will recommend -- actually, a book that really inspired me for the artwork is lars jonsson's birds of europe that was published in the 1990s, published in the u.s. by princeton university press. just fantastic artwork. it is not a fantastic field guide, but the artwork is just glorious. so that -- i will recommend not for the art work and there is a newer vote -- a new but they came out this year called through birds of north america. published by princeton as well. it covers all of the species recorded in north america that are included in my book. my book covers over 800 species, that leaves out the very barest of the rare, the species that have only been recorded three or four times. so to get information on all of those, there is an excellent new book called rare birds of north america. >> so would you say basically, if i could cannot size you would be most helpful to have your guide about which for the bird watchers says okay, you want to see website things i'm not heard to identify it is such a bird, but the photographic guide also is helpful in that it looks like that. >> ye

check out some of the artwork that's in the book. it's actually beautiful. some of the original drawings. as we show some of these drawings, what are you trying to get across as far as a message is concerned to both parents and kids if they decide to read this book? >> sure. the message is mostly for children to understand that there are just so many different cultures out there and little kids come from all over the world. it's just nice to be able to show them, you know, some of the pictures in the book of an indian village. i specifically wanted my kids to see that because it's important to me. that's where my parents came from. but i also think it's important to just integrate your culture with also how to get your kids to relax. it's important for them to relax before they go to sleep and to not have ant about monsters and -- anxieties about monsters and what not. this is a way to help them channel into their happy thoughts. >> you took the leap trying to publish your own book. would you recommend other parents try to do this too? >> i think it's great
