we've shown you the numbers coming out of asia this day. ighth consecutive fall for shanghai, japanese markets also having a pretty tough time of it as well as the strong yen continues to hit the country's export. bigger macro stories coming out of the u.s. and also the euro debt crisis. to preview what we can expect from this week is kerry evans, global head of equity strategy at hsbc. good to see you again. >> hello. >> where do we start? what do you think specifically is going to be on investors' minds and pushing markets this week? >> we're going to get quite a lot of data coming out on the u.s. economy. the last few weeks it's becoming a bit clearer that growth is starting to slow. probably only a mid-cycle correction. markets are getting a bit nervous about that. we have the u.s. manufacturing ism. sounds a bit technical but probably the best indicator of the u.s. cycle. that comes out on wednesday. the nonfarm payrolls, best unemployment numbers come out on friday. those should give us a pretty good steer. >> what's happening in the f

let's take a look at some of the big falls here in asia today. 's pretty much across the board if we can get those numbers up. there we are, the nikkei down by 1.5%, hong kong down more than 2%. shanghai down 2.9%. the hsbc purchasing managers index coming in weaker-than-expected. australia being hit by weaker commodity prices down nearly 2%. which is say big fall for australia. in the u.s., markets set to open lower. it looks like the sell-off will roll right around the world. this is what the futures look like. even since the start of this show, futures getting worse. we were looking at a loss of around 0.5% at the start of the show. as you see now, expecting the dow to open down nearly 0.75. in fact, all three main indices there down fairly sharply. looking ahead to what's going to be driving the markets this week, there's another big batch of earnings. we have sony out, exxonmobil and costco among the big hitters. let's take a quick look at what's going on in the week ahead. on monday, obviously, this is when the u.s. president is due to touch

sometimes it's called the rise of asia. it should be more the return of asia. i call that power transition the normal shift of power among states. it's also called the rise of the rest. we know a fair amount about that. the other is power diffusion which is the shift of power from states, whether east or west, to nonstate actors. that's a lot newer and a lot harder for us to wrap our minds around. and the chapter in the book that illustrates this is the chapter on cyber power. the idea that you can suddenly cross borders with electrons and can do damage, and nobody knows whether you're a state or a nonstate actor, that's really quite new, and we haven't thought through what that means? let me talk of each of those quickly, and then we'll have time to discuss what they mean in practice. power diffusion is a product of this extraordinary reduction in the costs of computing and communications. if you look at what happened to computing power in the last quarter of the 20th century, it declined a thousandfold. the price of an automobile had declined as rapidly as the
