this is our section on at the ball park. what we have here is an original sam borne fire insurance map. what this show is d.c.'s original stadium, griffith stadium, was really in the heart of the urban community. you can see it's next to a number of businesses and residences, a college of dentistry, a hospital and a lot of row houses here and a lot of fans would often gather late in the day to sit on the roofs and watch a free game of baseball, but what these fire insurance maps do, and we have them for a number of cities, is show these stadiums are right in the midst of their community. they're not out in some idyllic pasture as we kind of thing of that with early baseball. this map dates and was updated in the early 20th century. another thing that we're talking about here are the customs and rituals that fans experienced at the ball park, everything from keeping score. here we've got a handwritten score card from the first game of the 1936 world series between the yankees and the giants. keeping score is an unusual aspect
