'cause i had always been swept away by the work of ronnie gilbert, the woman singer in the weavers. and we just went uphill from there. the weavers had a great combination of both hedonism on the lee hays side all the way through the social responsibility and the powerful singing and into the total aesthetic, almost amish approach of pete seeger to life. so i was talking to ronnie about it once before, and i said, "it looks to me that your band, like our band, "all combined together to make "one sort of complete human being, you know, with all their faults and all their vices and virtues." they combined to make one whole unit that was very impressive to me. so i built what was our band on a--unconscious, actually-- but a format of what the weavers had done, both in social responsibility, in terms of doing benefits, in terms of helping people that you were in a position to help. the band sugarland was about to go on. gail is a manager now for sugarland. ook at these pictures of people trying to prop up the stage. tell us, how is sugarland responding in what are they telling you. >> everybody is devastated. i've spoken to jennifer and my tour manager and everyone is in shock. devastated and obviously, we're waiting to see what's happened and if anybody indeed has died. horrible situation. >> do they say it was a gust of wind? did they say -- what did they say happened? >> well, they were in the bunkers in a prayer circle waiting to go on stage and the tour manager held them for a few minutes because of the weather. if she hadn't held everybody would have been on the stage but obviously the devastation regardless of them being on stage or people being hurt in the audience. it's just overwhelming for us.

the music has always been a rich part of san francisco's history. 25% of the bands that performs at thests are internationally renowned dance. this year we had phish, muse, john fogarty from credence clearwater revival, and badu. we also celebrate san francisco's food culture. we are probably one of the only festivals in the country and maybe the world that all of the food vendors except for one our local restaurants. it is really showing the diversity and the excellence of our food culture here in san francisco. in addition, we have over 30 wineries from northern california. wine is an integral part of the fabric of northern california and we celebrate that with our linwine lands. we added mclaren pass this year, where we had food trucks. we added a whole area with chocolate confections. i'm not sure how to say that. we just want to say thank you very much to the city and to rec and park. we are thrilled and we are honored to be able to give $1.4 million to san francisco's rec and park this year. thank you. commissioner buell: thank you. commissioner lee? commissioner lee: i have a que

run dmc wanted to make walk this way, but they didn't even know the name of the band. they wanted to make a record called toys in the attic. "you want to make toys in the attic? "oh, that funky beat. yeah, i know that." i didn't know the record either. and rick's like, "you stupid? "that's aerosmith. what are you? crazy?" and rick had the--the foresight to go out and get aerosmith and bring them in, and they were like, "no, we don't want to say their words. "we just want to use their beat, man. and we don't want much of their guitar to play." the way we'd have cut it, you know, the beat would play, and then it'd go "wa, na." and then they'd get to say it. like, the guitar would never get a full lick in. so it would just go, "ra." that's the most you'd hear, that beginning of the guitar, or maybe a little bit more, but never would we-- were we going to play the whole record. rick said, "no, i promise you, it's okay." and they made the record, begrudgingly, and it was rick's genius that made that record so much bigger than the others, and it takes, you know, i mean, that
