look at our air quality, still really bad for parts of the north bay, unhealthy for the rest of the bay area and even going into the week. it's still going to be very unhealthy and taking a look at our temperatures for the inland areas we're in the upper 90s today. unfortunately, not much of a cooldown anytime soon. at least we are feeling the changes during the early morning hours. as we head over to you, mike, how is it looking now for the drive? >>> kari, we have to start off with a couple issues affecting your main commute and then we'll also, of course, talk about the fire zones. as we look at your map, mostly green around the bay. over to the altamont pass, west 580, a little accident there blocking part of your fast lane. one of the cars is perpendicular to traffic so tough to see the hazard lights. folks are slowing to get around it. that's tying up out of the altamont adding another 15 minutes at least if you're coming off the 205 merge. southbound 880 through oakland your typical construction zone so southbound it will start around 23rd. in the north bay we have the fire zone,

burning in the north bay. at this hour the fire has burned more than 46,000 acres and it is essentially out of control. just 2% contained. at least 80 homes in napa and sonoma county are lost, not to mention the damaged property to wineries and hotels. more than 20,000 structures remain threatened. here is the latest for county evacuation orders. to the county line between diamond mountain road and petrified forest road. also the town of angwin and the area of poke valley. how far the fire has expanded in napa and sonoma county since it started on sunday. >>> in santa rosa eviction orders are already lifted for some homeowners in the fire zone. returning yesterday was gut wrenching. many had no idea if their homes had been saved or not. we spoke to one relieved neighbor in the skyhawk neighborhood. >> five or six homes burnt on the corner. i was 300 feet from my house burning. >> some people now living in skyhawk are all too familiar with this. some of them moved after losing their homes in the firestorm that w

we have some low 80s for the south bay as well as much of the north bay. has been a record fire season. i wanted to go over it because across the state we've had so many acres burn during this record season in 2020. fires have burned 3.6 million acres and if you do the equivalent 5,625 miles. and par we've seen an increase, it's climate change. our temperatures warming up and an increase of 2 degrees has caused more acres to burn and this includes last year. we had a record season just a couple years ago. we know that as we head into fall we get these diablo winds, hot weather and possibly an event this weekend. a high risk above normal fire season. for northern california this will decrease once the diablo winds go away. and with the hot weather coming this weekend that had be of concern starting on sunday and more on that. >>> things are looking pretty good. i have a spot of slowing and a concern. out to the tri-valley where it's eastbound 580. eastbound getting away from the dublin interchange at airway boulevard. i told you about that. and so they're g

the heat wave all around the bay area. bob redell is tracking the possibility of power shutoffs to fire danger -- because of fire dangers. first, thom jensen in brentwood with a look at the fire danger sparking so much concern. good morning, thom. >> reporter: good morning. you can probably see the breeze hyped us with the palm trees blowing. that increases that fire danger, of course, cooling down the temperatures a little bit. we're down into the 70s right now at 5:00 a.m. we were already at 82 degrees but that fire danger and then the health concerns with the heat and the smoke. despite those health concerns from the national weather service and from health officials about the excessive heat we found lots of people out yesterday during the evening and during the daytime out shopping and enjoying dining. some of the hottest parts of the bay and the tri-valley area. shoppers finding labor day deals, not scared away by the heat even if they have to stand in line to get the bargains. >> some stores have lines, just keeping s

e in the bay area. such a run here. smoke and ash throughout the area that we all see when we walk out the door. kari has a look at our forecast right now, certainly this is tough. we have another spare the air day. >>> yeah, and so we'll see if this will get extended. most likely it will though we'll see improvements in our weather conditions. we have so many fires burning all around us. as we take a look outside in san francisco a little bit of fog to start out this morning, and that's going to help us cool off just a bit especially along the coastal areas and let's go throughout the day looking hour by hour at our temperatures where we are going to see about the noon hours. for the south bay we're at 81 degrees. as we go into today we'll see those highs still reaching into the 90s but this is definitely better, highs over 100 degrees. we're up to about 90 degrees at 3:00 in antioch and 94 around concord and then going into this evening if you're planning to head out and will be doing outdoor activities, 70s and droppi

we also have some shots the golden hues over the bay bridge. we have a picture that was taken around noon in san francisco also one of sebastian theater and sonoma plaza. yeah, great shots and thank you for sharing those with us the spare the air alert banning wood burning will be in effect through at least friday. so that's not what you want to be doing this as thick smoke from the wildfires continue to just develop the region creating the orange hazy skies that we all saw yesterday and today is now the 26th straight day of a spare the air alert we're setting records every single day wow look at that. hans in orange haze met san franciscans trying to get a workout outside but parts of the city have very unhealthy air quality on the first day the gyms are actually officially allowed to expand their outdoor services on the same day some gym owners learned that city employees like us apd have been able to work out indoors since july first while the public has had to cope with wildfire smoke and you know coming soon chilly temperatures. it seems to

area especially for the north bay and the east bay. as we look at our air quality there is an air quality advisory for the north bay and east bay but not a spare the air alert. we may see that coming back this weekend as we see the smoke coming back in once again and, of course, barring no new wildfires. we will have moderate air quality. as we look at what we're expecting, that fire danger for many of our hills from the east bay but the highest risk will be for parts of the north bay where those temperatures will be hotter and those winds will be higher. so as we go through the forecast looking at our inland areas still some 80s today, but then 90s tomorrow and then we're in the triple digits for an extended period of time from sunday into early next week. we've been watching this, mike. how is it looking for the morning commute? >>> it's looking better than those temps as far as i'm concerned. i don't care for the hot. you know that. i don't care for the problems for drivers. let's look at the maps. it's that good news/bad news situa

risk for the east bay hills. look at how hot our temperatures get. we're going from the 80s today and tomorrow to the 90s on saturday and then the triple digits for the end of the weekend. we're going to see these major changes and, of course, we'll have more updates on that. mike, how is it looking right now for the morning commute? >> well, we've had these changes since quarantine earlier and shorter lived build. we show you san jose where there was more slowing that kicked in but the northbound side now coming towards us still lightening up even as we speak. as we look at the map, not a lot of slowing on the sensors from 680 to oakland road and push over towards contra costa county and smooth flow of traffic getting through the entire area and traffic out there and no delays and little build for the castro valley area which is starting to ease up even now. i talked about low clouds around the bay bridge toll plaza and look at the golden gate bridge, also. let's not forget fog there. no problem, folks are used t

and then in the north bay gusty winds across the north bay hills really above a 1000 feet is we're going to see the strongest gusts but some of those gusts could be 35 to 45 miles per hour that starts late monday night into tuesday and possibly early on wednesday so certainly i fired and danger something we don't want to worry about our party is already going right now but not only that we want to those hot temperatures and the humidity is going to drop way off tomorrow morning, not so bad, but still not great already talking 3040 50% in some spots by tomorrow afternoon. you're down in the 20's, maybe some 30% range in some parts of the bay area so starting to dry out and you get that record heat that's likely to settle in kind of like that last heat wave. now doesn't look like we've got lightning storms to trigger more fires, but you never know very hot this weekend in fact record heat expected throughout the weekend specially starting on sunday into monday. now you can see the combination of the smoke from the fires and the hot temperatures combined high fire danger in effect going to

the to the south bay now the campbell unified school district in the south bay will begin in person classes next week, the district got its reopening plans approved by health officials modified in person classes will start tuesday at forest hill elementary and for other schools. the district superintendent says the idea is to provide some extra help to students who are struggling with distance learning. >>getting on their zoom lessons. if there are challenges or they just need to be redirected and reminded to get back onto their lesson. it will be supervised process for students to complete their on the district's reopening plan also focuses on safety measures hygiene social distancing. >>mask and other public protocols so far a 126 students are all signed up. >>toward a phase, one goal or capacity of 266 students on campus. we're also monitoring the latest local covid cases and so far the state has recorded more than 700. 26,000 cases with more than 13,000 deaths. now across the bay area there are more than 86,000 reported cases and more than 1100 deaths. labor day weekend is finally here

the north bay 98% contained we're pretty close the scu complex fires in the east and south bay also 98% contained. the czu complex fires in san mateo and santa cruz counties are 93% contained and the what were firing point raze national seashore marin county is 95% contained. well the destructive fire season in california is now pushing some families to actually consider leaving the place they've called home for decades, this is what's left of john prado's home of 35 years in vacaville check it out you can see walking through everything that used to stand is just now a pile of rubble like so many of his neighbors prado and his wife. they had to flee the hennessy fire. we're in the middle of the night prada says that it's just devastating to see everything gone his home was insured but he says that he's not going to rebuild. >>probably not think just go and buy a house and i used to be a general i can work that hard them not is. there's really hard so. we've got to move on. >>prada says that he doesn't want to rebuild because he's just worried that another fire could threaten his home

orange for the north bay, valleys of the east bay and the santa clara valley. not as bad around the coast and central and south bay. around the water is where it mixes around ground level and helps us out. it'll be a while before we're talking about good air quality in any portion of the bay area. outside right now, it's just surreal. it looks like mars, one of saturn's moons. it looks like this because the stuff in their atmosphere filters out the sunlight. there are the lights over oracle park right there. 59 degrees downtown, mostly in the 60s. we anticipateed the smoke overhead to tay, but the depth has thrown a wrench into things. look at the temperatures compared to yesterday. we're talking 20 to 30 degrees cooler for a lot of locations except around the water we're not going to drop off that much throughout the rest of the night. the blanket of smoke acts like a blanket. upper 50s and low 60s. temperatures tomorrow will be below average. i think the smoke will thin a little and allow the sun to come through. we'll zoom around and show you the highs. low

the east and south bay cooler up to the north bay. so to break it down for you in 99, it looks like by 2 o'clock, although most readings in the far east bay and the solano county but looking at 100 plus we'll have to go that 4 zone forecast for you coming up in just a bit part alright, dave thanks a lot. we'll as day was mentioning we're in for another weekend of blistering and potentially dangerous heat and unfortunately that raises the potential for some power outages and also wildfires. this is fire crews are still working to contain the fires that are already burning in the bay area kron four's dan thorn is at lake berryessa where the cleanup from the hennessy fire in napa county as for us recreation areas to be closed off. >>well this closure comes from the u.s. bureau of reclamation. the hennessy fire one of the lnu complex fires tore through this area and now hundreds of workers will be here throughout the weekend to make the lake safe again in the meantime napa county deputies want to make sure that people stay away. napa count

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live there at the scene. kris, have you gotten any information from police about what led up to all of this? >> reporter: police aren't saying a lot about the investigation but we've seen them looking around for evidence with flashlights. just to tell you where we are, south eighth and reed street not too far from san jose state. we are right next door to one of the fraternity houses near campus. this was the scene around 10:00 when officers arrived in this neighborhood. they found five people shot, two of them died here at the scene, the three others are at an area in the hospitals. people were gathered around some sort of street side memorial. a neighbor tells us there was another shooting in the area shortly before this one. >> this is not the type of community we want to live in. this is not the example we want to set for our kids. and, i mean, what can we really do about it? deal with it. >> reporter: sfpd has not confirmed the earlier shooting the one witness mentioned. they have not also said whether t

here in the bay area, the lnu complex fires in the north bay are now 96% contained. so they're making certainly some progress on that front the scu complex fires in the east and south bays now 98% contained. the czu complex fires in san mateo and santa cruz counties now 89% contained and then lastly the woodward fire up in the north bay at the point reyes national seashore is now 95% contained this morning. >>the creek fire tripled in size in less than a week, it's burned 200,000 acres so far and it's just 10% contained, let's look at the map that shows you where the fire is now the dark green is the initial fire and then the light green is where it spread for the first 2 days, the yellow and the light orange portions that's what happened on days 3, 4, and then the orange represents last thursday and friday more than 14,000. structures are threatened by this fire and low visibility means little opportunity for water or fire retardant drops. >>where that the smoke has been. >>lane in staying in the area and with aircraft it has not been able to go up. >>more than 400 h
