this will make its way into the bay area later this morning, but looks like the north bay will have the highest chance of getting one more round of showers coming in. this is early in the afternoon where we see light rain moving into santa rosa, approaching napa, but the chances will be slighter there as we move into the rest of the day. it's going to be hit or miss with the rain chances with the focus further to the north. we will all see a partly cloudy sky. looking at the rainfall totals and how we are doing this month. santa rosa measuring over 10 inches of rain so far, and that's a surplus of 9 inches. we have seen a nice start to our water year because of the big atmospheric river. a lot of the rainfall totals are extremely high even for this point and well above where we should be. we will break this down a little more coming up in about 15 minutes. let's get to our high temperatures today. reaching in the mid to upper 60s. we'll see mid-60s for the east bay as well as near the coastline. not a lot of big change in temperatures today. we are going to see the highs staying on the

heading into the bay is live. we know there's some trouble spot there is. >> just as you started saying that, it started raining a little bit. we're right by the creek. and people here know something about flooding because they have had to deal with a couple times over the past several years. no threat of that this morning. this would have to happen for several days for that to happen. the creek just is at two feet. it would have to go over 13.3 feet to start flooding. but there's dangersen the roadways. i shot some dash cam video as i was coming in. highway 37 was really raining heavy at times. and water was pooling up in some areas. same on highway 101 coming into san raphael this morning. water pooling there in areas. so watch for the hydroplaning. keep the speeds down. heavy rain in had the valley also this morning. pg&e is also warning people there could be weather-related outages this morning. we know there's one very close to where we are. and that one about 547 customers. pg&e has a crew on the way to asses

the rest of the bay area. in during the early wednesday morning hours. then light spotty showers lingering into wednesday and possibly on and off rain through the end of the week. as far as the rainfall totals, it shows some of the models could maybe put down an inch of rain in parts of the north bay. also for mill valley, maybe a quarter inch of rain. this would be great for us if it pans out. also the models are showing very high amounts of snow going toward the end of the month for the sierra. we could see possibly a couple feet or more in some of our upper elevations, a lot of our ski resorts, and this would be a nice and early start to our ski season. our temperatures are going to stay nice and cool, only coming up to the low 70s to the inland areas on thursday, and that's in between the showers falling. looks like we will see off and on rain through thursday and friday, and then maybe another round of rain coming in on sunday. this won't bust the drought but could put an end to the wildfire season, so it'

this one will mainly be for our mountains in parts of the north bay and the east bay and central valley our temperatures head up. concord going into the low and mid-80s this weekend. that's a quick spike in temperatures before we go back to the 70s from sunday throughout much of next week. take a look at this. we have good news from the climate prediction center putting out the outlook for the end of october, and it shows for much of the bay area, there could be cooler than normal temperatures and above normal rainfall. when we get those kinds of conditions, the sierra could get snow. in the near term, it's dry. our temperatures, still going up and down. it's fall and we sometimes see that. we get a quick taste of summer before the weekend, and then back to fall and san francisco makes it into the low 70s for the weekend. >>> mike, you are seeing a big buildup in the toll plaza. >> yeah, and this is because of the big crash at appian way, westbound 80 coming through pinole. now we have what you actually expect to see about now. more slowing and recovery coming off the carquinez bridge a

and remaining over the north bay. but we are going to track the heaviest downpours right along the san francisco peninsula and east bay by 1 o'clock sunday afternoon light scattered showers for those of you in the south bay until we all start to notice those moderate heavy downpours by early sunday evening and then going to see a drying trend early overnight hours on monday for the north bay. but look at the storm how it's just going to linger bringing moderate rain still in the san francisco peninsula, east bay and south bay during the overnight hours monday. but then by around sunrise monday morning. that's when that storm the atmospheric river going to start to exit out of the bay area. bring us scattered showers monday night. even continuing through tuesday one to 3 inches of rain for the south bay, 2 to 4 inches for the san francisco peninsula and east bay upwards of 6 inches or less for most of the north bay high surf warning also going to go into effect sunday into monday where we could see breaking waves as hig

not as windy for the north bay. are up to 70 degrees after staying in the 50s in ukiah yesterday. we are watching the reservoir levels rise. let me show you the numbers and what it looked like before all of the rain we had for east bay mud. it was at 67% capacity, but we were doing bad in the south bay. only 18% of the capacity, and guadalupe at 18%. we have seen a rise in the reservoir levels, and the most in the north bay with all of the rain, and it was 17% and now at half capacity. in the north bay, it's better than what we were seeing. it does look like we will take a break from the rain for the next several days, and then next week we will see another chance of a pretty good amount of rain moving in starting on monday. as we go into the out look for the next two weeks, some of the highest chances of getting more measurable rain will be across northern california. that's looking pretty good. we will be watching that on monday. we have a chance to let all of the water soak in, and, boy, was it a lot. we will see

bay as well. and so right now, nothing yet in the south bay. nothing in mountain view. fremont, but look on the way. this is going to be making its way in within the next 10, 15, 20 minutes or so into portions of the south bay and also the santa cruz mountains as well i'm going to take you through the timeline of the big storm we're tracking heading into the weekend. >> this is not the big one, but it looks big when it looks like at this chunkier version. east shore freeway, it came over from the north bay. colting down the peninsula it will be hitting 101. now south of the bridge, everything is a lot lighter and it's fine right now, but the big rain is starting to move in. the big deal is not on the freeway. in the south bay, we have the pd continuing with an investigation of a deadly crash here at metcalf road. the alternate is 101. but police are have closed that intersection. so we'll have to avoid that. that's important for the southern portion. and an important note. we're talking about solo crashes, which may be more common as the rain comes in today. >> the storm

we will talk about them all here on "today in the bay." we will start out with the forecast, so a lot of people are going to san francisco, kari, to check out all the events. how is the weather playing out for us today? >> it will be nice but cool. anywhere across the bay area as you are heading out, especially this evening, make sure you have a jacket. some folks this morning need an umbrella. we are looking at storm ranger where we see light showers passing by. for the most part, most of us are not seeing rain. for those of us that do see the rain, it's enough to make the car extra dirty so you do have to head through the car wash. we will see some of the showers passing by with much more of the active weather heading over to the sierra. as we wake up and head out the door in walnut creek, right now our temperatures are in the mid-50s. we are seeing a mostly cloudy sky. we will see peeks of sunshine as we go through the rest of today, but overall it's looking nice and cool. the chances of rain moving out of here over the next few hours, a

in the east bay, we're going to see some of the worst air quality for much of the bay area, so limit your time outside as the smoke comes in. we will see temperatures in concord reaching into the low 90s today. san mateo in the mid-70s. santa rosa will see mid-80s. tonight we come back down to our usual temperatures, but look at what happens tomorrow. it doesn't get nearly as warm. many of us will be in the 60s and 70s. you can see the changes at the bottom of the screen with the 7-day forecast. we will see a cold front quickly moving in. very hit or miss light showers further to the north of us. more clouds moving in. it stays cool throughout much of the week, and let's check out concord and the changes we will see this week. air-conditioning today, 94 there. look how cool it will be towards the end of the week, by friday, we may not break 70 degrees. for the weekend it will be slightly warmer. overall we are looking at a big drop in temperatures, going from the 90s to 80s tomorrow. in san francisco we're going from the mid-70s today to the low 60s for much of the rest of the week. >

let's start in the south bay. rth of mcallen avenue. >> all lanes were shut down for. i would say at least 1510, minutes, the air they just opened up the lanes there because i was gonna say take 8.80, to 87 has a good option around that. but again, you've got a traffic collision the e to 80 northbound north of the college avenue got so bad they had to shut down all the lanes temporarily just open and then back up. so if you're trying get around that delay long to 8887 would still be good options for you. there. we have another traffic accident. it's on the richmond. sandra fell bridge 5.80, westbound as you're heading out of richmond. so that in addition to the slick conditions makes for a longer commute. a little under 60 minutes for your drive time they're an overturned tractor trailer. we have a northbound at west tennyson road that off-ramp there block to 38 would be a good option if you're trying to get around that delay a lot of roadway flooding as you're heading into the maze into the city there. so long, 8,

kari, how long will that smoke linger in the bay area? >> it's going to start to move in later on this afternoon, late morning into the afternoon. some of the smoke starting to come in from the south of the alisal fire. moderate air quality, and that means people sensitive to the smoke, children and the elderly should limit time out there in the south and east bays, and it may not make it all the way up to the north bay. by 10:00, we're in the low 60s. when the temperatures warm up, most likely that smoke will be settling in. we will see the temperatures in the low 80s for san jose, and 83 in napa. for livermore, expect a high of 85 degrees. we'll talk more about more changes ahead in our weekend forecast. >>> mike, you are saying the alert does continue right now? >> it does. you know where the casino is, we have slowing when you get to the expressway. we have a closure for golf course drive. only the middle lane gets by. major damage, but no major injuries reported. not a lot of slowing because traffic is light up there. you can loop off

for the north bay, highs reach into the upper 70s. looking ahead, we are looking to see if there's any chances of rain. a couple more storm systems do move very close by. a lot of the rain drying up once again before it gets here, but it will cool off temperatures and may kick up the winds at the same time. in gilroy, milder weather starting today, warming up as we go into the first part of the weekend. look how the temperatures drop down on sunday and we stay fall-like and seasonable through much of next week. our temperatures once again still fluctuating. just a couple of days of a spike in temperatures reach into the 80s tomorrow and saturday for the inland areas, while san francisco goes to the 60s to the mid 70s and back down to the 60s by early next week. >> i'm sure most of us have had to deal with dead batteries. i counted ten products alone in my apartment that need batteries. that can't be good for the planet. they're not. a study by the state of california estimates americans throw away 4 billion batteries each year. they'r

first, breaking news in the east bay. water continues to gush from a water main break flooding the neighborhood in contra costa county. >> today in the bay's bob redell has been there all morning long. bob, a little less soggy now. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you. the big issue for east bay mud is getting the water line turned off. we're here and you are looking down hemme boulevard if you look to the right, there's a preschool and we spoke to the principal, and the water is not flooding the school. and there's a woman that ordered sandbags and got them from the local hardware store, her home is not flooded but the garage is. the pipe that bursts is old. i'm watching out for cars here. they were installed in the 1950s. a lot of the pipes are old, and they are in the 70-year range. this is the third water main break in the past week. there was one yesterday about a half mile from here, and one last week about a mile from here. the handle valve is underwater and they are trying to get to the valve, and they have someb

and for those of you in the east bay. but for the south bay sonny bill. san jose the like what atmospheric river. it's still dry there. but don't worry, you'll notice the impacts of that atmospheric river arriving sunday nights. you are going to have to wait few more hours. but for the rest of us, especially those of you in the north bay. it's going to be knocking on your doors and windows by around 3 o'clock for your sunday morning. so don't be surprised if you notice some heavier downpours and gusty winds by then. but we are tracking overall very gloomy and cloudy conditions visibilety extremely poor as well. so please drive safely for your saturday night commute when tracker for already tracking winds picking up out of the south. for those of you in pacifica sustained winds at 22 miles per hour and wind gusts going to increase in the 30 to 40 mile per hour range along the coast and east bay shoreline, even for those of you in the highest peaks atlas peak in the north bay. we are expecting wind gusts to be in that 40 mile per hour range possible gusts up

the north bay. it is all evaporating before it hits the ground. let's track the system, we stay dry through the night. showers are going to run into the north bay already by midday tomorrow. could be by midmorning, it will be light rain. not associated with that atmospheric river. this is the preview of coming attractions. showers possible anywhere across the bay area on saturday. they are going to be intermittent and light? keep the umbrella handy and flexible with the outdoor plans, not a wash out. best chance of showers will be the northern half of the bay area and showers continuing into saturday evening. it is late saturday night into the presunrise hour of sunday morning that the first wave of heavy rain moves in. this point, the bulk of the moisture aimed at the northern california coast. then, aimed in the north bay as we head farther into sunday morning. first half of the day, dry areas for the southern half of the bay area. it will be a soaking rain for the north bay through the first half

overnight we will get chances for the east bay and a little bit for the south bay. l continue with a spotty chance of a shower for tomorrow morning right into the afternoon with that cloud cover staying in place. rainfall totals with this right around a quarter to a half inch in the north bay, a quarter inch or less for a lot of the bay area. then right there in the santa cruz mountains looking at about half an inch on average. my seven-day forecast will see that second system move in thursday and friday with a quarter to one inch. higher totals in north bay. then saturday night into monday, that's where you could see a half to 2 1/2 inches. so by monday if that storm system holds together -- again, sunday and monday we could be looking at flooding concerns once we hit monday's forecast, raj. >> we have the 49ers' game sunday night at levi's stadium. >> get your poncho ready. >> it could be wet. that will do it. for everyone here at nbc bay area, thanks for joining us. enjoy your evening. ever wonder how san francisco became the greenest big city in america? just ask

into the south bay. some of the heavier pockets of rain for the south bay won't be until late tomorrow. sunday evening, over night and into tomorrow morning, we got plenty of sierra snow. look at this, 40 or 50 miles per hour winds. the national weather service issued several advisories heading into tomorrow. let's go through some of those. north bay, wind advisory goes into effect. central bay at 5:00 a.m. this could mean power impacts and the potential for flash flood watches is also there. this takes in effect on sunday because of how much rain we'll be getting in such amount of time. we'll be monitoring quick rising water streams and burn scars. there is also a high surf advisory. we are talking about dangerous rip currents. never turn your back to a wave. winter storm for the sierra potential of two or three feet of snow. don't forget your poncho if you are going to the game. it will get gusty and rainy at time. >> perfect weather to stay into watch sunday night football. >>> it's shy of 7:22. we hav
